What Is a SCSI Host Adapter? Definition, Role, and Key Distinctions

A SCSI host adapter connects a computer to a transport carrying SCSI commands. Learn how the HBA, its driver, initiators, targets, and connectors differ.

A SCSI host adapter is the controller that connects a computer’s I/O system to a transport that carries SCSI commands. It commonly provides the host-side initiator that sends commands to storage targets. The term describes a role in the storage path—not one specific connector, card, or kind of SCSI.

What a SCSI host adapter does

The adapter links the computer to a storage transport and helps move commands and data between the host and devices. A simplified path is:

In SCSI terminology, the initiator originates device-service and task-management requests; the target receives them for processing. In a typical storage setup, the host acts as the initiator and a storage device exposes a target port. The Linux kernel describes the host as a bridge between the computer’s I/O bus and a SCSI initiator port, which sends commands to target ports. Linux kernel: SCSI Interfaces Guide and Linux kernel: SCSI mid-level – lower-level driver interface explain these roles. The formal terminology is also set out in IETF RFC 4455.

Host adapter versus HBA driver

The host adapter, often called a host bus adapter (HBA), is hardware. Its driver is software that controls that hardware and handles the operating system’s requests. Oracle’s Solaris developer documentation describes the driver’s work as managing the adapter hardware, accepting commands from a target driver, transporting commands to the requested target, transferring data, collecting status, and reporting completion or failure. See Oracle: SCSI Host Bus Adapter Drivers.

A driver is therefore not another name for the physical adapter, even though both are needed for the operating system to use the hardware.

SCSI commands do not specify one physical connector

SCSI refers to commands and the way devices interact; those commands can travel over different transports. The Linux kernel lists USB, SATA, SAS, Fibre Channel, FireWire, and ATAPI among the bus types that can carry SCSI commands. It calls such a bus a transport and the controller that connects to it an HBA. That does not make adapters interchangeable: each model supports particular transports, ports, connectors, cables, and devices. Linux kernel documentation provides the transport definition and examples.

A controller might be built into a motherboard or provided as an add-in card; SNIA’s storage education material describes both as general possibilities. An HBA is not necessarily a discrete PCIe card. SNIA: Controllers.

Example: a SAS host bus adapter

The LSI SAS 9211-8i illustrates why the transport matters. Its October 2014 manufacturer guide describes a PCIe-to-SAS adapter for servers and workstations with eight internal 6 Gb/s SAS/SATA ports, two internal SFF-8087 mini-SAS connectors, and a PCIe 2.0 x8 host interface. It supports SATA and SAS link rates of 1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 Gb/s, and the guide specifies support for up to 256 SATA or SAS end devices. These are specifications for that model in that dated guide, not a general definition of an HBA or a recommendation about current availability. It is a SAS HBA, not a legacy parallel-SCSI adapter. See the LSI SAS 9211-8i PCI Express to 6Gb/s SAS HBA User Guide.

What to check when choosing an adapter

If you are selecting hardware to connect storage, check the whole connection rather than relying on the words “SCSI adapter” or “HBA.”

SATA PCI Express Controller Card, PCIe to 3Gb/s SATA ESATA IDE Controller Expansion Card Adapter, Support for RAID
  • Comply with PCI Express 1.0 a standard, support for Ultra ATA 133 hard drive, and downward support for Ultra ATA 100/66/33 standard.
  • The adapter card supports hard drives with a capacity of 137 GB or more (48-bit LBA mode).
  • Support 1 external ESATA interface and 1 internal SATA interface, the transfer rate can be up to 3Gb/s.
  • Support for RAID 0/RAID 1/RAID 0+1 mode, support JBOD, with various storage methods.
  • The is simple, insert the adapter into the corresponding PCI Expres slot, read the drive disk and insert the hard disk to use.
  • Transport: Confirm whether the device uses parallel SCSI, SAS, Fibre Channel, or another transport.
  • Host interface: Check the available slot and its generation against the adapter’s requirements.
  • Ports and placement: Confirm whether you need internal or external connections and how many ports are required.
  • Connector and cable: Match the adapter’s connector to the drive or enclosure, including the correct cable.
  • Device support: Verify drive or enclosure compatibility and supported link rates.
  • Operating system and driver: Check that a compatible driver is available for your operating-system version. For older hardware, an old guide’s operating-system list does not establish current compatibility; the 9211-8i guide itself directs users to verify software versions and driver details.
