A Samsung Galaxy smartphone is an Android phone from Samsung’s Galaxy family. “Galaxy” is the brand, not a single model or a fixed set of specifications. The letter that follows the name, such as S, A, or Z, tells you which range the phone belongs to, and that range is what mostly determines its design, price tier, and feature level.
What the Galaxy name covers
Samsung uses Galaxy as the umbrella name for its smartphones, and it describes them as Android smartphones. The name spans several phone ranges at different price points, so two phones with “Galaxy” in their names can differ a great deal in size, display, camera, processor, and cost. Treat the brand as a family and the letter as the category.

What the series letters signal
Samsung’s UK buying guide, Samsung Phone Ranges Explained: Z, S & A, states: “Samsung Galaxy smartphones use letters to distinguish between the different phone ranges.” The same guide says the letters indicate categories and that models within a range can vary in specifications, memory, and connectivity. As of the guide’s October 2026 retrieval, it describes three main ranges:
Galaxy Z: foldable phones
Galaxy Z phones fold. Their defining question is form factor: a compact flip-style design versus a larger foldable that opens into a tablet-sized screen. Because the hinge and folding display change the shape of the phone, Z models need to be compared on how they open and close as well as on the usual specifications.

Galaxy S: premium flagships
Galaxy S is the premium flagship line. Samsung positions it for buyers who want the highest feature tier, and the main comparison points are performance, camera system, and display quality. Flagship status is a positioning within the range, so check each model’s specifications rather than assuming the newest S phone is the best fit for every use.
Galaxy A: everyday phones at a more accessible price
Galaxy A is Samsung’s everyday range. The UK guide describes it as offering everyday features at a more accessible price. Compare A models on what matters for daily use, such as battery life, screen, camera quality in ordinary light, and price, rather than on flagship-level performance.

Galaxy M: a range listed in some markets
Samsung’s UK guide treats Z, S, and A as the three main ranges and does not list M among them. Samsung’s Brazil guide, Conheça as linhas de celulares Samsung, includes M alongside Z, S, and A. The lineup you see therefore depends on the country. If you are shopping for an M model, confirm that it is sold locally and check its exact specifications.
| Range | Samsung’s description | Where it is listed | What to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z | Foldable smartphones | UK guide, main range | Form factor (compact flip vs. larger foldable), hinge and folded size, price |
| Galaxy S | Premium flagship smartphones | UK guide, main range | Performance, camera system, display, price |
| Galaxy A | Everyday features at a more accessible price | UK guide, main range | Battery, display, everyday camera performance, price |
| Galaxy M | Not described in the UK guide | Listed in the Brazil guide; not stated for other markets | Local availability and exact model specifications |
Samsung’s guides say the right range depends on how you use the phone. Their positioning is broad marketing guidance, not an independent benchmark, so use it to narrow your search and then compare specific models.

Where the Galaxy S line started
The Galaxy S series is the oldest of the current ranges. Samsung Global Newsroom, in a company history article on its mobile products, says: “The first Galaxy S device was announced in 2010 under the tagline ‘Super Smart.’” That date marks the start of the S series. It does not mean the entire Galaxy brand, including Z, A, and M, began in 2010.
How to choose a range
- Start with your priorities. If you need a foldable screen, look at Galaxy Z. If you want top performance and camera features, look at Galaxy S. If you want solid everyday performance for less money, look at Galaxy A.
- Confirm the range is sold in your country. Check Samsung’s official site for your region, because the Brazil guide includes M while the UK guide does not list it as a main range.
- Compare exact models. Within each range, check the display, processor, cameras, memory, battery, connectivity, and price of the specific model. Specifications can change between models in the same range.
- Match accessories to the exact model. Samsung’s UK guide points readers to phone cases for Galaxy models. Buy a case made for your precise model. Foldables in particular need a design-specific case because the folding shape differs from standard phones.
Common misunderstandings
- Not every Galaxy phone is foldable. Only the Z range is foldable.
- Not every Galaxy phone is a flagship. Flagship status applies to the S range.
- The letters are not a guarantee of identical features. Models within one range can differ.
- Regional catalogs differ. A range or model that appears in one country’s guide may not be sold in yours.
In short, a Samsung Galaxy smartphone is any Samsung Android phone in the Galaxy family. The letter tells you the range: Z for foldables, S for premium flagships, A for everyday phones at a more accessible price, and M where Samsung lists it locally. Always confirm the exact model and its availability before buying.
