A reverse French manicure places its contrasting curve at the base of the nail, beside the cuticle. A classic French manicure puts its contrasting edge at the free tip. The colors and finish can vary; the placement is what makes the design “reverse.”
What a reverse French manicure looks like
The design frames the cuticle-side edge with a curved accent, often shaped like a semicircle or crescent. Treatwell also calls this style “cuff nails.” The accent may be a solid color, glitter, or other nail art, and it can be subtle or bold. A sheer or neutral base is one option, not a requirement.

The name describes the accent’s position rather than a fixed color recipe. A CBSE Beauty and Wellness curriculum describes a reverse French as a white nail-bed accent with a transparent, probably neutral shade over the rest of the nail, but contemporary versions use other palettes too.

How it differs from a classic French manicure

A “double-cuffed” design combines accents at both ends of the nail. This differs from a reverse-only manicure, which focuses the accent at the base.

Variations in color, finish, and coverage
- Color: Choose a restrained neutral contrast or a bolder, clashing combination. At Halpern’s Spring/Summer 2020 show, nail artist Marian Newman created a runway version that shifted the classic tip accent to the base and left the pointed ends clear. Vogue quoted Newman describing its colors as “clashing, but not matching”; that is one runway treatment, not a rule for the style.
- Finish: The curved accent can be plain, glittery, or paired with additional nail art.
- Coverage: A filled semicircle is one option. A negative-space version can leave the base unpainted while making that area the visual focus; Marie Claire describes this as a blend of reverse and outlined or negative-space approaches.
How to do a reverse French manicure at home
Regular polish
- Start with clean, dry nails and apply base coat.
- Apply two coats of your chosen base shade and let them dry.
- Using a fine nail-art brush, draw a semicircle directly beside the cuticle on the lower nail bed.
- If desired, add a second color adjacent to the first accent, as in ANNY’s example.
- Seal the design with clear top coat.
ANNY’s tutorial uses a fine brush to make the cuticle-side curve. The shades in its example are optional; use colors that suit your design.
Gel polish
OPI’s GelColor tutorial uses a detail brush to paint a reverse moon at the cuticle, with base coat, color layers, and top coat cured in an LED lamp. Its instructions specify 30-second cures in OPI’s LED light for that system. Cure times are not universal: follow the directions for the gel products and lamp you use.

What to ask for at a salon
Ask for a “reverse French” or a “cuticle-side French accent” and show a reference photo. Those descriptions make the intended placement clear, though salon naming may vary.
