Choose the base hue and finish for the French look you want
French bases can be sheer pink, peach-pink, rose, milky pink, milky white, or brown and warm nude. A sheer base lets more of the natural nail show; a milky shade softens and blurs the look; a cream finish gives a cleaner, more opaque appearance. Think about the relationship between the base and tip. One practical approach is to pair a warmer-looking base with a warmer white tip, or choose a milky base when you want a softer, more neutral transition. Test the color on the nail before committing
- Make a short list. Choose a few base hues using your complexion as a starting point, along with the finish you prefer.
- Compare each option with the intended tip. Check whether the base and white look harmonious together rather than judging the nude alone.
- Preview a coat on your nail if possible. A sample or test coat shows how the polish reads on your own nail more reliably than a bottle or product image. Consider how additional coats change its transparency.
- Choose the result you prefer. If a recommended shade feels too pink, too brown, or dull against your skin, try a nearby hue or a different finish.

Use product names as examples, not promises
OPI lists Bubble Bath among pink options for fair skin, while essie describes Ballet Slippers as a sheer option for light skin.
