A Minecraft proxy is a gateway that players connect to first. It accepts each session, then routes the player to a backend Minecraft server such as a lobby, survival world or minigame. From the player’s perspective, the network can use one address while the actual game servers remain separate.

You usually need a proxy only when you operate two or more backend servers or need a deliberate gateway architecture. A single standalone survival server is normally simpler and safer to run with direct connections.

In a conventional Minecraft setup, the player’s client connects directly to one game server. That server handles authentication, worlds, entities, chat and plugins. A proxy inserts a gateway in front of those game servers. Players connect to the proxy address, and the proxy attaches each connection to an appropriate backend.
Velocity is documented by PaperMC as a Minecraft proxy that can change the server to which a connected player is attached. Pterodactyl’s Minecraft guidance describes BungeeCord, Waterfall and Velocity as proxies that let players reach several backend servers through one address. The proxy is therefore not another world type or a performance mode for one server; it is a network-routing layer.

The terms you will see
- Proxy: the gateway process that accepts player connections and selects a backend.
- Backend: an ordinary Minecraft server running a world or game mode. Paper, Spigot, Fabric and Forge servers can all be backends when their forwarding requirements are met.
- Network: the complete arrangement of the proxy, its backend servers, forwarding settings, plugins and network controls.
How a proxy routes a player
- The player enters one public hostname or IP address in Minecraft.
- The proxy accepts the connection instead of a backend server accepting it directly.
- The proxy chooses a backend, commonly a lobby or a default server.
- When the player selects another mode, the proxy moves the existing session to a different backend rather than requiring a new public address.
- The proxy forwards identity information that the backend needs, such as the player’s IP address, UUID and skins when using Velocity’s modern forwarding model.
This arrangement gives a network one public entry point while allowing each backend to be maintained, restarted or configured separately. Proxy plugins and plugin messaging can also coordinate actions across the gateway and backends, but those messages cross a trust boundary and must be handled as untrusted input until their source is verified.
When you need a proxy
Use one for a multi-server network
A proxy is appropriate when players should move among separate servers while experiencing one network. Typical examples include a lobby that links to a survival server and one or more minigame servers. Each backend can have its own world, plugins and maintenance schedule, while the proxy presents a common entrance.

- Players use one address rather than memorising a separate address for every mode.
- A lobby can direct players to available game servers.
- Backends can be isolated from public clients and exposed only to the proxy.
- Network-wide features can be implemented at the gateway or coordinated through plugin messaging.
Do not add one to a single server by default
If every player joins one standalone survival server, a proxy has no second backend to route to. Direct connection is normally simpler: there is one process, one configuration boundary and no identity-forwarding decision between two servers. Adding a proxy in this situation introduces additional failure points without delivering the main benefit of a shared multi-server entry point.
A single server could still sit behind a gateway for a specific architectural reason, but that is an exception rather than a requirement for running Paper, Spigot, Fabric or Forge.
Velocity, BungeeCord and Waterfall: what to compare
These products solve the same broad routing problem, but the practical choice depends on client versions, forwarding security, backend software and plugin availability. The following comparison uses the documented distinctions that matter during planning.

Velocity is not a drop-in runtime for every BungeeCord or Waterfall plugin. Treat plugin support as a per-plugin compatibility check, not as a guarantee that an existing plugin directory will work after a proxy swap.

Modern and legacy forwarding
Why modern forwarding is preferred
PaperMC describes Velocity modern forwarding as a custom forwarding format that is more secure. The proxy and backend share a secret that is arranged in advance. The backend uses that authenticated forwarding data to obtain the player information it needs instead of trusting arbitrary connection data from the public internet.
Use modern forwarding when your client versions and server implementations support it. Enable the backend’s Velocity support, configure the same shared secret on both sides and make the proxy and backend online-mode settings agree. Use one forwarding mode at a time; mixing modes creates failed connections or unsafe assumptions about which identity data can be trusted.
What legacy forwarding changes
Legacy BungeeCord forwarding exists mainly for compatibility with older clients and established deployments. PaperMC explicitly describes legacy forwarding as fundamentally insecure. If you must use it, enable the backend’s BungeeCord support and compensate with network controls and, where appropriate, a protection such as BungeeGuard. Do not treat legacy mode as equivalent to modern forwarding merely because both can pass player information.
Is a Minecraft proxy secure?
A proxy can improve the network’s security architecture, but it is not automatically secure. The critical control is backend isolation: untrusted internet clients should not be able to connect directly to backend ports and present themselves as the proxy.

PaperMC’s security guidance states that Velocity modern forwarding is not a replacement for a firewall. Use host firewalls or equivalent network controls so backend listeners accept traffic only from the proxy or from the private network path you intentionally configure. Pterodactyl similarly describes proxy networks in which backend servers are hidden from the internet.
- Expose the proxy’s public listener, not every backend listener.
- Restrict backend traffic with host-level or provider-level firewall rules.
- Keep the forwarding secret private and identical only where it is required.
- Use modern forwarding instead of legacy forwarding whenever supported.
- Do not assume a successful login proves that the forwarding path is protected.
Plugin-message trust
Plugin messaging deserves the same caution as network traffic. A message forwarded incorrectly can allow a player to impersonate the proxy to a backend. Message handlers should accept only trusted sources and mark messages as handled correctly so an untrusted or duplicated message is not processed as an instruction from the gateway.
Compatibility by server implementation

Compatibility is not limited to the backend jar. Check the Minecraft client versions, the forwarding mode, any required compatibility mod and every proxy plugin before migrating an existing network.
How to plan and deploy a proxy network
1. Define the topology
List every backend and its role: for example, a lobby, survival world and minigame server. Decide which server receives a new player and which servers players can reach from it. This prevents you from installing a proxy before you know what it must route.

2. Choose the forwarding model
Prefer Velocity modern forwarding if all supported clients and backends permit it. Choose legacy BungeeCord forwarding only when an old-client or compatibility requirement outweighs its security disadvantages. Record the choice; every backend in the path must be configured consistently.

3. Match implementation requirements
For each backend, identify whether it is Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge or a hybrid. Install or enable the documented compatibility component where required, such as FabricProxy-Lite, ProxyCompatibleForge or SpongeForge. Treat a Forge-Bukkit hybrid as unsupported with Velocity rather than trying to force a connection.
4. Configure identity forwarding
Enable the selected forwarding support on each backend. For modern forwarding, place the same shared secret in the proxy and the backend configuration. Confirm that the proxy and backend online-mode settings match the documented arrangement. Never enable modern and legacy forwarding simultaneously.
5. Put the firewall boundary in place
Before inviting players, restrict backend listeners so they cannot be reached by arbitrary internet clients. The proxy should be the intended path into the network. A forwarding secret without this network boundary does not prevent a client from attempting a direct backend connection.
6. Validate one route at a time
- Start the proxy and one backend.
- Confirm that the proxy can reach that backend on the intended internal address and port.
- Connect as a test player through the public proxy address.
- Verify that the backend receives the expected UUID, IP and skin information for the selected forwarding model.
- Add the next backend and test switching before adding network-wide plugins.
This staged approach makes it clear whether a failure comes from routing, forwarding, backend reachability or a plugin message.

Do not assume that placing one proxy behind another is supported. PaperMC labels proxy-behind-proxy setups unsupported. If your design contains multiple gateway layers, verify support for the exact products and versions before committing to it; a normal single-proxy topology is the documented path.
Likewise, a proxy does not make incompatible backend software compatible by itself. It routes connections, but the backend still needs the correct forwarding support and any required mod or plugin.

The player reaches the proxy but cannot join a backend
- Check that the backend process is running and reachable from the proxy on the intended address and port.
- Confirm that the backend is listed in the proxy configuration with the correct address.
- Check that the selected forwarding mode is enabled on both sides.
- For modern forwarding, compare the shared secret character for character.
- Verify that proxy and backend online-mode settings match the required arrangement.
The player joins but has the wrong identity or skin
Inspect the forwarding configuration rather than changing account data. A mismatch between modern and legacy modes, an incorrect secret or missing backend support can prevent UUID, IP or skin information from being forwarded as intended.
A plugin works on BungeeCord but fails on Velocity
Check whether the plugin has a Velocity port or a documented alternative. A BungeeCord or Waterfall plugin is not automatically a Velocity plugin, even when both products route Minecraft sessions.
Players can bypass the proxy
Recheck firewall rules and backend exposure. Modern forwarding improves authentication of forwarded identity data, but PaperMC’s warning still applies: it is not a replacement for a firewall. Backend isolation must be enforced at the network layer.
A practical decision checklist
- One backend only: use direct connection unless you have a specific gateway requirement.
- Multiple backends and one address: deploy a proxy.
- Modern clients and compatible software: prefer Velocity modern forwarding.
- Clients as old as Minecraft 1.7.2: evaluate legacy BungeeCord forwarding, then add compensating protections because it is fundamentally insecure.
- Fabric or Forge: verify the required compatibility mod or configuration before selecting the proxy.
- Existing BungeeCord plugins: confirm a Velocity port or supported replacement before migrating.
- Any deployment: isolate backends with firewall rules and test routing, identity forwarding and plugin messages separately.
What a proxy does not do
A proxy does not replace a game server, merge worlds, remove the need for backend administration or guarantee protection from attacks. It also does not eliminate the need to monitor each backend, keep software compatible and maintain a clear trust boundary. Its core value is narrower and more useful: one controlled entry point and session routing across separate Minecraft servers.
