A proxy server sits between a device and another server, receiving or forwarding network requests. A forward proxy can make a destination see the proxy’s IP address instead of the client’s; a reverse proxy sits in front of origin servers to route or manage incoming traffic. Neither setup, by itself, guarantees anonymity or encrypts every connection. What each party can see depends on the proxy’s role, protocol, configuration, and operator.
How does a proxy server work?
A proxy is an intermediary in a network request. Instead of communicating directly with a destination, a client sends a request through the proxy, which then relays or forwards it. The proxy’s position in that path determines whether it is a forward proxy or a reverse proxy.

Forward proxy: client to proxy to destination
A forward proxy acts on behalf of clients. The client directs a request to the proxy, and the proxy connects to the destination. At the network level, the destination generally sees the proxy’s egress IP address as its peer rather than the client’s address. Cloudflare explains this distinction in its proxy server explainer.
That describes what the destination sees about the network connection—not everything the proxy or other parties can learn. The proxy operator may be able to associate activity with a client, and encryption depends on how the connection is set up.

Reverse proxy: client to proxy to origin
A reverse proxy receives requests on behalf of one or more origin servers. It sits on the server side: clients connect to the proxy, which forwards requests to an origin. A deployment can use it to route requests, distribute traffic, cache content, handle TLS, or apply security controls. Cloudflare describes these roles in its reverse proxy explainer and its overview of how Cloudflare DNS works.
A reverse proxy can keep an origin server’s address out of the ordinary client-facing path, but that is not automatic protection. If the origin remains directly reachable, or the proxy and origin are misconfigured, traffic may bypass the proxy.
What can a proxy server hide?
A forward proxy can hide a client’s source IP address from the destination at the network-connection level by making the onward connection from its own egress address. That does not mean the user is anonymous. The destination may still identify a user through an account login or other information, and the proxy operator may have a different view of the connection than the destination.

- From the destination: the proxy’s egress IP may be visible instead of the client’s IP.
- From the proxy operator: what is visible depends on the protocol, encryption boundaries, configuration, and logging practices.
- From other observers: a proxy does not make every observer blind. What a network observer can see depends on which connections are encrypted and where those connections terminate.
IP masking should not be confused with hiding account activity, browser fingerprints, or all information that could link requests. Nor does the word “proxy” establish whether an operator keeps logs. Those details require information about the particular service and setup.
Does a proxy encrypt traffic?
Not inherently. A proxy describes an intermediary role, not a universal encryption guarantee. A proxy can relay an encrypted HTTPS connection without reading its contents; in a managed configuration, a proxy can also terminate a connection and inspect traffic. The relevant question is which connection leg is encrypted and where encryption ends.
When HTTPS is properly configured, it protects content between the browser and the website. A proxy may still learn connection details, depending on the protocol and setup. Do not assume that every proxy terminates TLS—or that every proxy is a blind tunnel.

A service-specific example: Cloudflare Privacy Proxy
Cloudflare’s documentation describes its Privacy Proxy as using HTTP CONNECT for TCP and CONNECT-UDP for UDP, carried over HTTP/2 or HTTP/3. In that design, the proxy learns the destination host and port and forwards an encrypted tunnel without inspecting its contents; the destination sees the proxy’s egress IP rather than the client’s actual IP. These are properties of that documented implementation, not of proxies in general. See How Privacy Proxy works.
How is a proxy different from a VPN?
A VPN commonly creates an encrypted tunnel from a device to a VPN server. That server then connects onward to the destination, which can see the VPN server’s address. A proxy is a broader intermediary pattern: it may handle only a browser, selected apps, or particular requests, though a specific service can cover more traffic.
| Question | Proxy | VPN |
|---|---|---|
| What traffic is covered? | Depends on the proxy and configuration; it may be limited to selected apps or requests. | Commonly described as a device-to-VPN-server tunnel; the actual scope depends on setup. |
| Where does traffic go? | Through the proxy before reaching the destination. | Through the VPN server, which connects onward to the destination. |
| Does the term guarantee encryption? | No. Encryption depends on protocol and connection setup. | A VPN commonly uses an encrypted device-to-server tunnel. |
| Does the term guarantee anonymity or no logging? | No. | No. |
Cloudflare’s VPN explainer describes the device-to-server tunnel and onward connection. To compare a particular proxy and VPN, check which apps and traffic are included, where encryption terminates, what the destination, network observer, and operator can see, and the service’s authentication and logging practices. Also consider whether you need client-side privacy, policy controls, or protection and delivery features in front of an origin server.

Can a proxy route only some requests?
Yes. A PAC (proxy auto-configuration) file contains JavaScript rules that tell a browser whether to use a proxy for a particular destination. Depending on those rules, some requests can go through a proxy while others connect directly. Cloudflare explains this behavior in its guidance on when to use PAC files.
Setup requirements can also be specific to a service. For example, Cloudflare’s Privacy Proxy documentation says direct browser configuration is not possible for its authentication-header requirement and describes using a local SOCKS5 helper. That is a limitation of that service’s documented setup, not a general restriction on browser proxies.
What should you check before using a proxy?
- Traffic scope: identify which browser, app, or requests actually use the proxy and whether other traffic connects directly.
- Protocol and encryption: find out what protocol is used and which connection legs are encrypted or terminated by the proxy.
- Visibility: distinguish what the destination, a network observer, and the proxy operator may learn.
- Operator practices: review authentication and logging details for the specific service instead of inferring them from the word “proxy.”
- Purpose: decide whether the need is client-side privacy, traffic policy and routing, or server-side delivery and protection. A reverse proxy and a forward proxy address different sides of a connection.
- Compatibility: check whether the setup works with the apps, destinations, and location-sensitive behavior that matter to you.
Lucas Pardue and Christopher Wood, in Cloudflare’s technical article “A Primer on Proxies,” published March 19, 2022, describe proxying as “the act of encapsulating one flow of data inside another” and frame it as a way to establish privacy boundaries. Their article also emphasizes that proxy protocol details vary, including whether confidentiality is provided.
