An AI prompt is the input you give a model to guide what it does next. In a text chat, that is usually a question or instruction; systems that accept more than text can also take inputs such as images or audio. A useful prompt makes the task clear, supplies relevant context, and describes the answer you want. Then you can review the response and refine your request.
What is an AI prompt?
OpenAI defines a prompt for a large language model as “a text input that initiates a conversation or triggers a response from the model.” In everyday use, a prompt is the request or instruction you send to an AI tool. Depending on the model and interface, it may also include an image or audio input. OpenAI’s prompt engineering best practices covers text prompts, while its prompt engineering guide discusses designing inputs to guide model responses.

Prompt engineering is the practice of designing and refining those inputs to guide a model toward a useful response. You do not need special syntax to get started: a clear description of what you need is often the most useful first step.
What should you include in a prompt?
A practical prompt gives the model enough information to understand both the job and the desired result. Use these elements when they matter to your request:
#1 Best Overall
- Task: Say what you want the model to do, such as explain, summarize, compare, draft, or classify.
- Context: Provide relevant background, source material, constraints, or the situation the answer should address.
- Audience and tone: Identify who the answer is for and whether it should sound plain, formal, friendly, or otherwise appropriate.
- Output: Specify a useful form or level of detail, such as a short explanation, a table, or an email draft.
Include details that affect the result; extra length by itself does not make a prompt better. OpenAI’s guidance on prompt best practices recommends being clear, providing context, and refining a response as needed.
How do you write a prompt? Try this four-part method
- Name the task. Start with a direct verb: explain, compare, outline, or draft.
- Add the context. Include the audience, purpose, relevant material, and any constraints the model needs.
- Describe the output. Ask for a particular format, tone, or level of detail when it will make the result easier to use.
- Review and refine. Check the answer, then correct an assumption, add missing information, narrow the scope, or request a different style.
Example: turn a vague request into a usable one
Instead of “Help with my presentation,” try: “Draft a five-slide outline explaining household composting to apartment residents who have never composted. Keep the language plain, include one practical example per slide, and flag any local rules I need to check.”
Rank #2
If the reply is too technical, follow up with: “Rewrite for a middle-school reading level and define any unavoidable technical terms.” The first request sets the task, audience, and format; the follow-up gives the model a specific change to make. This is an illustrative example, not a claim that this wording has been experimentally validated.

For work with several distinct goals, split it into focused requests rather than asking for everything at once. For example, you could first ask the model to organize supplied material, then ask for a draft or analysis, and finally review it against explicit criteria. This makes it easier to see what needs correction at each stage. OpenAI recommends breaking complex requests into smaller, focused prompts and working iteratively in its prompting guidance.
Rank #3
Keep the sequence relevant to the outcome: request only the detail, steps, and constraints that affect the job. If the first answer reveals that the model misunderstood your goal, clarify that specific point instead of merely making the prompt longer.
What if the AI gives a poor answer?
Treat an unsatisfactory response as a cue to make the next request more precise. Identify what is wrong or missing and ask for a targeted change:
Rank #4
- If the answer is too broad, narrow the question or define the scope.
- If it overlooks important details, provide the missing context or source material.
- If it assumes something incorrectly, correct that assumption explicitly.
- If the form or tone is wrong, state the format, audience, or style you want.
Review the revision too. Clearer instructions can improve how well your request is communicated, but they do not guarantee that every answer is correct.

Do prompts work the same way in every AI tool?
General practices such as stating the task and supplying relevant context are broadly useful, but details of how a tool handles instructions depend on the platform. For example, the OpenAI API uses message roles: system or developer instructions take precedence over user instructions. OpenAI’s API prompting guide recommends putting overall tone or role guidance in the system message and task-specific details or examples in user messages. A consumer chat interface may hide these roles, and other providers may follow different conventions.
Best Value
For most people using a chat interface, the practical step is to write a clear request in the place the tool provides and follow its own documentation for platform-specific controls. Do not assume an API-specific role hierarchy applies identically to every chatbot.
Can a prompt guarantee the answer you want?
No. OpenAI describes model output as non-deterministic: responses may differ across model types and versions, including snapshots in the same model family. A well-specified prompt communicates your needs more clearly, but it cannot ensure a particular response or eliminate errors. See OpenAI’s prompt engineering guide for its discussion of model behavior and prompting.
For production applications where consistent behavior matters, OpenAI recommends pinning a model snapshot and building evaluations to monitor behavior as prompts or models change. Those API practices are aimed at application developers; casual chat users can instead review important answers and verify consequential claims.
