A pressure-sensitive inlay is an RFID or NFC inlay supplied with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and a release liner. The adhesive lets the inlay be converted into a self-adhesive label or, depending on its construction and use, applied directly to a surface. Manufacturers often call this format a “wet inlay.”
What the term means
“Inlay” here means the functional RFID/NFC component: a chip and antenna on a carrier. It is later converted or integrated into a finished label or tag. “Pressure-sensitive” describes the adhesive-backed format. The liner protects the adhesive until the inlay is converted or applied.

Avery Dennison describes the wet-inlay stack as four elements: the inlay carrier, the chip and antenna, the pressure-sensitive adhesive, and the liner. Its overview also separates a five-layer wet-inlay process from a three-layer dry-inlay process. It states that a wet inlay is not suitable for printing as supplied. A printable label is a further construction built on top of it.

Pressure-sensitive (wet) vs. dry inlay
| Aspect | Pressure-sensitive (wet) inlay | Dry inlay |
|---|---|---|
| Adhesive | Pressure-sensitive adhesive with release liner | None |
| Attachment | Converted into a self-adhesive label, or applied to a surface where the construction allows | Integrated into a label, card, ticket or other product in a later manufacturing step |
| Layers (Avery Dennison overview) | Five-layer process | Three-layer process |
| Printable as supplied | No; a finished label is a further construction | Not applicable until integrated into a product |
A real product example: Avery Dennison AD-740
The term describes a format, not a specification. Avery Dennison’s AD-740 shows how much else must be defined. It is a Type A NFC RFID inlay operating at 13.56 MHz with the ISO-14443A protocol. Its datasheet lists dry inlay, pressure-sensitive inlay and label formats.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact & Portable Design: Each package includes 50 NFC tags with a 1.0-inch round NTAG215 card, as small as a quarter coin, making it easy to carry and store. The adhesive backing ensures effortless attachment to various surfaces
- Durable & Waterproof: Made of high-quality PET material, these NFC tags are waterproof, durable, and designed to withstand wear and tear. They function perfectly even in wet conditions, ensuring reliable performance wherever you use them
- Easy Setup & User-Friendly: Simply hover your NFC-enabled device over the tag to initiate data transfer. Equipped with 504 bytes of NDEF memory, these tags allow quick writing and sharing of information. They also feature a read-write lock function for flexible use.(NOTE*. - It can not be edited or reset after setting it as a read-only tag. )
- Wide Compatibility: These NFC tags are compatible with devices such as NFC-enabled phones and TagMo Amiibo. They are rewritable, so you can store and update different data as needed. Note: Amiibo tags can only be edited once and cannot be reused
- Versatile Applications: Ideal for creating Amiibo cards, sharing social media links, music, connecting to Wi-Fi, or automating smart home tasks. These tags enable quick and easy data sharing for a variety of uses, from gaming to daily convenience
For the pressure-sensitive part RF700072, the datasheet specifies:
- A 1.65 × 1.04 in (42 × 26.5 mm) die-cut
- A PET substrate
- A general-purpose, permanent hot-melt inlay-to-liner adhesive
These details apply only to that listed product. The datasheet carries a © 2018 footer, so confirm current specifications with the manufacturer.

- Works directly with the Connecteam app No power or batteries required Includes an anti-metal layer allowing the tag to work on any surface, including metal High durability with epoxy coating Passive NFC tag – safe and maintenance-free
What “pressure-sensitive” does not tell you
- It does not set a radio protocol or frequency (HF, UHF, NFC).
- It does not identify the chip, antenna or size.
- It does not define the adhesive type, strength or permanence.
- It does not guarantee the inlay is printable or ready to use as a finished label.
How to choose one
Avery Dennison’s Choosing RFID Inlays guide identifies product composition and geometry, radio frequency, and the product’s lifecycle environment as the main design variables. Compare these points before specifying a format:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Attachment and converting: adhesive plus liner for pressure-sensitive formats, or adhesive-free integration for dry ones. Converting inlays into labels or tags uses specialized equipment and expertise.
- Radio performance: frequency, protocol, required read distance, and packaging or nearby materials that can interfere with the signal.
- Target material and geometry: the tagged item’s composition, size and shape.
- Finished-use conditions: durability, temperature, printing needs and regulatory conditions. The guide notes that encapsulation can add durability and temperature resistance.
Test the finished construction
Performance depends on the whole assembly and where it is used. The AD-740 datasheet says the product “should be tested by the customer/ user thoroughly under end use conditions to ensure the product meets the particular requirements.” It also does not represent that the product fits every particular purpose. Test the inlay on the real item, with the real packaging, label stock and environment.
