You can move photos from a Canon PowerShot to a phone without a cable only if your exact model has built-in wireless. If it does, the usual route is Canon’s Camera Connect app: pair from the camera’s own menu, then let the app switch to Wi-Fi to browse and save images. “PowerShot” covers many generations, and menu names and connection steps differ between them, so confirm your model first.
Step 1: Confirm your model has wireless
Do not assume a PowerShot has Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Check your model’s manual or its Canon support page. Canon’s product pages list Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for the PowerShot SX70 HS, and Bluetooth or Wi-Fi smartphone connectivity for the G7 X Mark III. These are examples only, not proof that every PowerShot works this way. If your camera lists neither, the app route below is not available, and a USB cable or an SD card reader is the realistic fallback.
Step 2: Prepare the phone
- Install Canon Camera Connect (Android or iOS).
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the phone.
- Use a current phone OS. Canon’s PowerShot V10 guide advises the latest version and points to the app store listing for supported OS versions.
- Charge the camera and turn it on.
Step 3: Pick the connection method your camera uses
Method A: Bluetooth pairing first, then Wi-Fi
Canon’s instructions start pairing from the camera, not from the phone’s general Bluetooth settings.
- Open Camera Connect on the phone.
- On the camera, open its smartphone, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection menu. Choose the option to add or register a smartphone, or the Bluetooth pairing option. The wording depends on the model.
- Follow the confirmation prompts on the camera and in Camera Connect.
- When pairing finishes, open the camera-image view in the app. It is often labeled “Images on camera”. The app starts Wi-Fi so you can browse and save the images you want.
Pairing and transfer can use different radios. Bluetooth handles the pairing, and Wi-Fi does the browsing and saving. Canon’s V10 guide documents this browse-and-save-over-Wi-Fi pattern.

Method B: Direct Wi-Fi with the camera’s SSID
Some models have no Bluetooth flow. They show a network name and password in the camera’s Wi-Fi setup.
- On the camera, open the Wi-Fi function or the connect-to-smartphone option.
- Note the SSID and password shown on the camera screen.
- On the phone, open Wi-Fi settings, select that SSID and enter the password if asked.
- Return to Camera Connect and select the camera.
If Camera Connect cannot find the camera
- Model support: confirm the exact model works with Camera Connect.
- Radios: make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are both on.
- Camera screen: the camera should be on its waiting or connection screen, not just powered on in shooting mode.
- Network: on direct-Wi-Fi models, the phone must have joined the camera’s network before you select the camera in the app.
- Old pairings: Canon’s Bluetooth support page warns that stale pairing records can interfere with pairing another camera. Clear them only if your model’s official troubleshooting says to.
- Screens differ: Canon notes that screens may change after updates to camera firmware, Camera Connect, Android or iOS, so the app may not match older instructions exactly.
Older PowerShot and IXUS wireless systems
Earlier wireless features were separate, model-specific systems. A legacy Canon IXUS guide says the camera lets you “transfer them to a personal computer or printer wirelessly, without the need for cables.” It did this with a WA-1 wireless print adapter, and its computer workflow required Windows XP SP2. That statement applies to that camera and era, not to every PowerShot. Do not apply that workflow to a modern phone, and do not assume an old accessory works with another model.

What this guide cannot settle
I could not verify transfer speeds, setup times or reliability figures for these cameras, so none are given. Your exact model, phone OS version and region determine the final button-by-button path. Check Canon’s page for your model and the current app store listing.
