A portable digital player is a battery-powered device that stores and plays digital media while you’re on the move. Depending on the model, it may handle audio only or play images and video as well. “MP3 player,” “digital audio player” and “portable media player” overlap, but they don’t guarantee the same features.
What does “portable digital player” mean?
The term describes a portable electronic device that stores digital content and decodes it for playback through a screen, speaker, headphones or another output. Portable media players can support audio, video and images; a digital audio player (DAP) is the audio-focused term. IEEE’s category overview describes portable media players as battery-powered devices combining storage, decoding, output and a user interface.

These labels are not strict, mutually exclusive product categories. Samsung uses “portable media player (PMP)” and “digital audio player (DAP)” together in its support explanation of MP3 players and digital audio players.

“MP3 player” is the familiar name for an audio player associated with MP3, short for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3. MP3 is a digital audio coding format; the name alone does not tell you every format a particular player supports, or whether it can play video. The U.S. National Library of Medicine’s MeSH entry for MP3-Player defines the device as portable electronics for storing and playing audio or media files.

What should you check on a specific player?
- Whether it plays audio only or also images and video.
- Which audio and video formats it supports.
- How much built-in storage it has and whether it accepts removable memory.
- Which outputs and connections it offers, including whether it supports wired headphones or Bluetooth.
These checks matter more than the broad category name: two devices both described as MP3 players can differ in storage, playback and connectivity.

The broader label reflects devices intended to carry more than music. In a January 9, 2003 Microsoft News Center announcement, Bill Gates described the Media2Go concept as handheld players for downloading, storing and playing video, music and photos. That announcement is historical context, not a description of current products.
