How to Use Cameras and Logs to Check for Rodent Activity at Home

A home camera can document a rodent where and when it records one, but a quiet clip cannot prove the home is rodent-free. For a more useful assessment, pair dated footage with a repeatable log of physical signs—especially whether new droppings or damage appear after safe cleanup.

What evidence can tell you

Use camera footage and physical signs for different purposes. A recording can show an animal on a particular route during the camera’s recording window. Physical evidence can show activity beyond its view or recording times. Comparing both over repeated checks gives a more complete picture than relying on either alone.

Evidence What it can support What it cannot establish on its own
Camera footage A visible animal was at the camera’s location while it was recording; repeated clips may help document timing or a route. No activity elsewhere, no activity outside recording times, a reliable species identification, or a count of animals.
Droppings Rodent presence. New droppings after safe cleanup support an inference of current activity, according to CDC guidance. A pile that has not been monitored does not reliably show when it was left.
Gnaw marks or damaged packaging Possible rodent activity in the area; CDC notes gnaw marks can be signs of presence, and EPA lists chewed food packaging among possible signs. Whether the damage is recent or whether activity is still happening.
Nesting material, holes, or stale odors Additional possible signs to record and investigate; these are listed by the EPA. Species or timing based on an uncertain sign alone.

CDC’s urban rodent survey guidance describes infrared video cameras as a way to document nighttime activity and supports recording signs and conditions. It does not validate consumer camera footage as a way to estimate a household rodent population or prove absence. CDC urban rodent survey guidance

How to monitor a suspected route

  1. Choose a location. Start where you have seen signs or where food, shelter, or a possible entry gap is present. Record the exact room and spot rather than writing only “kitchen” or “basement.”
  2. Make a baseline record. Note the date and time, location, visible sign, and any likely food or access condition. Photograph a physical sign when useful. CDC survey guidance recommends recording signs and conditions, and notes that photographs can help document particular infestation problems.
  3. Position the camera to observe a route. If available, use an infrared-capable camera to cover a suspected path, particularly at night. Save any relevant clip with its date, time, and camera location. Treat it as supporting documentation, not a test for whether the whole home is clear.
  4. Compare observations over time. Look for repeated visible movement and for new or recurring physical signs. A quiet recording means only that the camera did not capture an animal at that place and time.
  5. Use cleanup as one check when safe and appropriate. CDC says droppings found after cleaning indicate active rodent presence. Follow its cleanup precautions; do not sweep or vacuum untreated rodent waste. See CDC cleanup instructions.

A simple record can include:

  • Date and time of each check or clip
  • Room, exact location, and camera position
  • Whether footage showed an animal
  • Physical signs and where they appeared
  • Cleanup or control action taken
  • What you observed at the next check

This is a practical household log, not a CDC-mandated form. Keeping entries tied to locations and dates makes it easier to distinguish a new sign from one already noted.

How to interpret droppings and other signs

CDC identifies droppings and gnaw marks as signs of rodent presence, but an existing sign does not always establish current activity. The most useful change to track is whether signs reappear after safe cleanup. CDC states: “If droppings are present after cleaning, this indicates an active rodent presence.” CDC signs guidance

Record what you can observe—such as the location and whether something is new or recurring—rather than guessing the age or species from uncertain evidence. EPA also lists nesting material, holes, chewed food packaging, and stale odors as possible signs.

Clean safely before checking for new signs

Rodent urine, droppings, and saliva can transmit disease, and contaminated material can become airborne. CDC says not to sweep or vacuum untreated droppings, urine, or nesting material. Its cleanup guidance includes ventilating a closed area, wearing rubber or plastic gloves, thoroughly wetting waste with a bleach solution or EPA-registered disinfectant, allowing the specified contact time, and wiping it up. Follow the complete CDC cleanup instructions and the disinfectant label.

When to move from monitoring to action

Check and seal possible entry points

CDC advises checking inside and outside for entry points and sealing gaps. It notes mice can fit through an opening about 1/4 inch (6 mm) wide. CDC sealing guidance EPA recommends reducing available food, water, and shelter as part of prevention. EPA identification and prevention guidance

Use traps with household safety in mind

If you use traps, CDC says to keep traps and baits away from children and pets and follow product instructions. Its guidance says that if no rodents are captured for a week and there are no new signs, rats are gone; if new droppings, urine spots, or gnawing persist after one week, there may be an infestation. CDC trapping guidance

Get appropriate help for persistent or hard-to-reach activity

Seek appropriate professional or public health guidance if signs persist, the evidence suggests a heavy infestation, activity is in inaccessible areas, or rodents may have access to heating and cooling ventilation systems. CDC’s cleanup and trapping guidance identifies these as reasons to go beyond routine monitoring.
