A permanent magnet DC (PMDC) generator produces electrical output when its rotating armature moves through the magnetic field of permanent magnets. A commutator and brushes deliver the generated voltage with one polarity at the terminals. Its output is not automatically constant: speed, load, and the machine’s design affect the voltage available.
What is a PMDC generator?
PMDC stands for permanent magnet DC. It is a DC generator whose magnetic field comes from permanent magnets rather than an electrically energized field winding. The machine converts mechanical rotation into electrical energy. How does a permanent magnet DC generator work?
Magnets establish the field
Permanent magnets mounted in the stationary part of the machine establish magnetic flux across the armature. Unlike a separately excited or shunt DC generator, a PMDC machine does not normally adjust that field using a field winding.
Armature rotation induces voltage
As the armature winding rotates through the magnetic field, electromagnetic induction produces voltage in its coils. The general DC-generator relationship makes generated EMF proportional to magnetic flux and rotational speed, with additional design terms such as conductor count, pole count, and armature parallel paths. The commutator and brushes provide unidirectional output
Voltage induced in an individual rotating coil changes direction as the coil turns. The commutator switches the coil connections at the appropriate points in the rotation; brushes make electrical contact with it and carry current to the external circuit. What determines a PMDC generator’s output voltage?
Speed and magnetic flux are central to generated EMF. In a PMDC generator, the permanent magnets supply the field, so the main operating variable a user typically changes is rotational speed. The machine’s winding and armature design also matter. The voltage measured at the terminals can differ from the internally generated EMF because of the machine’s internal electrical conditions and the connected circuit, including load.

For that reason, a PMDC generator should not be assumed to hold a fixed terminal voltage as speed or load changes. Use the specific machine’s ratings and documentation to determine its intended operating conditions; the general EMF relationship alone does not establish a usable voltage range or regulation performance for a particular unit.
Where are PMDC generators used?
A documented educational example comes from the University of Alberta’s motor-generator laboratory. Its equipment uses a PMDC machine as a generator with a load box in a torque experiment. The lab explains that the load-box current is related to shaft torque by the machine relationship τ = kφia. This is a description of that experiment, not a universal rating or constant for all PMDC generators. That example supports the use of PMDC machines in teaching and laboratory work. It does not establish how common they are in other settings or justify assumptions about every application.
How should you choose or compare a PMDC generator?
Start with the nameplate and the application requirements. The first four comparison points below are nameplate ratings identified by the University of Alberta laboratory page; mechanical fit and load suitability are additional practical checks that should be verified in the unit’s documentation.

When comparing two machines, compare their documented ratings on the same basis and check the mechanical interface separately. Do not treat a rating or machine constant from a laboratory example as a category-wide value.
How is a PMDC generator different from other DC generators?
The distinguishing feature is how the field is produced. A PMDC generator uses permanent magnets, while other DC-generator designs may use field windings. Because a PMDC generator’s field is not normally adjusted with a field winding, its output behavior must be assessed through speed, load, machine design, and the unit’s own specifications rather than an assumed field-control setting.
