A multipoint control unit (MCU) connects multiple network endpoints to one shared conference. In the specific terminology of ITU-T H.323, it is an endpoint that enables three or more terminals and gateways to participate. Its control function coordinates participants; optional processing components handle media streams.
What does a multipoint control unit do?
An MCU enables a multipoint conference: a session involving several terminals, such as video-conferencing systems, and potentially gateways. It provides the conference-level function that lets those endpoints participate together. The term can describe the overall conferencing endpoint or server, rather than just one internal component.

Not every definition sets the same participant threshold or specifies the same media functions. ITU-T H.323 defines an MCU as an endpoint supporting three or more terminals and gateways. Microsoft Learn describes an MCU more generally as a server endpoint offering mixing services for multiparty, multiuser conferencing. Those descriptions have different scopes, so the H.323 threshold should not be treated as universal.

H.323 distinguishes the MCU as a whole from two components that may make up its functions: the Multipoint Controller (MC) and Multipoint Processor (MP). The MC is required; MPs are optional.
#1 Best Overall
- Video-enable huddle and small rooms: All-in-one form factor allows for easy setup of videoconferencing in small and huddle rooms
- Capture with clarity: With an Ultra HD 4K sensor, wide 120° field of view, and 5x HD zoom, see participants and all the action with clarity
- Hear voices with clarity: Beamforming mics capture voices up 4 m away, or extend pick-up to 5m with the optional Expansion Mic
- Motorized pan/tilt: Expand your field of view even further—up to 170°—to pan to the whiteboard or view other areas of interest
- Multiple mounting options: Easily mount to a wall or credenza, or add the TV Mount to place above or below the in-room display for secure mounting
Multipoint Controller (MC)
The MC manages multipoint participation and negotiates capabilities among terminals. It may also manage conference resources. The MC does not mix or switch audio, video, or data; its role is conference control.
Multipoint Processor (MP)
An MP performs centralized processing of media streams under the MC’s control. Depending on the conference, it may process one stream or several. Because the MP is optional, an H.323 MCU can consist of an MC without an MP.

Automatically focuses on whoever is speaking to foster active collaboration and increased participation while showing a 360° view of the room.
- AWARD-WINNING INTELLIGENCE. Features the award-winning and proprietary Owl Intelligence System, which uses visual and audio cues to automatically focus on and capture the best view of in-room speakers so remote participants can engage and participate in hybrid discussions effectively and productively.
- EASY DEPLOYMENT. Go from unboxing to your first meeting in 6 min with our plug-and-play USB device. IT admins can seamlessly manage their fleet of devices from our management tool, The Nest, via bulk registration, default settings management, and more.
- SMALL TO LARGE ROOM COVERAGE. The flexibility of the Owl Labs ecosystem is unmatched. Pair two Meeting Owls, a Meeting Owl and an Owl Bar, or add an Expansion Mic to expand video and audio reach in larger spaces. Compatible with Owl Labs’ Whiteboard Owl to complete your hybrid room setup.
- UNIVERSALLY COMPATIBLE. Certified for Microsoft Teams. Compatible with most web-based video conferencing platforms, including Zoom, GoTo Meeting, Google Meet, Cisco Webex, and many others.
In short, MCU means the overall conference endpoint or service, MC means its control function, and MP means optional media processing. The terms are related, but they are not interchangeable.

The meaning depends on the document and protocol context. H.323 uses a three-or-more threshold and defines an internal MC/MP architecture. Microsoft Learn emphasizes a server endpoint offering mixing services without stating that same threshold. In the telepresence context, IETF RFC 7262 describes an MCU as a device connecting two or more endpoints into one multimedia conference and says it may include a mixer.

- All-in-One Video Bar: The MeetingBar A10 integrates a 4K camera, 8 MEMS microphones, speaker, computing unit, Android OS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth into one compact device for home offices and small meeting rooms
- Intuitive Touch Control: Includes the CTP18 8-inch touch panel for seamless meeting control, supporting native Microsoft Teams and Zoom experiences
- AI-Powered Video: Features Auto Framing, Speaker Tracking, and an electric privacy shutter for smart, secure, and professional video conferences
- Crystal-Clear Audio: Advanced noise cancellation and full-duplex audio ensure everyone is heard clearly, even in noisy environments
- Easy Setup & Deployment: Plug-and-play design with included HDMI and Ethernet cables, wall-mount options, and flexible connectivity via Wi-Fi or wired network
These differences matter: mixing is not a requirement to assign to every MCU in every context. In H.323, the MP is optional, and its processing may cover one or multiple media streams. Cisco’s H.323 overview describes an MCU as controlling and mixing video, audio, and data, but also notes that some terminals have limited multipoint control built in, so a separate MCU with all those functions is not always required.
