To improve Fortnite performance on Intel HD Graphics, first identify the exact Intel GPU and check the rest of your PC against Epic’s current requirements. Then update the game and graphics driver, close unnecessary background apps, lower demanding graphics settings, and test Performance Mode. These steps can reduce load, but no setting guarantees a particular frame rate: results vary with the processor, Intel graphics generation, memory, cooling, drivers, game version, and resolution.
Check whether your PC meets Fortnite’s requirements
“Intel HD Graphics” covers many integrated GPUs with different capabilities, so identify your exact model before changing settings or seeking a driver. In Windows, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters, or search for System Information to review the computer’s components. Check the processor, installed RAM, Windows version, and storage as well as the GPU.

Epic’s PC requirements page currently lists Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 as minimum GPU options. The minimum also includes a Core i3-3225 at 3.3 GHz, 8 GB RAM, and a supported 64-bit Windows 10 edition. Epic’s recommended tier is substantially stronger: a GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DirectX 11 GPU with 2 GB video memory; a Core i5-7300U at 3.5 GHz, Ryzen 3 3300U, or equivalent; 16 GB RAM; and an NVMe SSD. See Epic’s current Fortnite PC requirements for the full list. Requirements can change.

If your GPU is older than the listed baseline, lowering settings may help, but it cannot turn every below-minimum system into a reliable Fortnite machine.

Measure performance before changing settings
Record the FPS shown by Fortnite in a repeatable situation, such as the same area or type of match. Change one setting at a time and compare under similar conditions; otherwise it is difficult to tell which change helped. Intel also recommends measuring FPS before tuning because results depend on the full hardware configuration. Avoid treating a single brief FPS reading as a promise of what the PC will sustain throughout a match.
Update Windows, Fortnite, and the right graphics driver
Install available Windows and Fortnite updates, then update the graphics driver for your specific Intel GPU generation. Get Intel drivers from Intel or follow the computer manufacturer’s driver guidance where appropriate, particularly on laptops whose drivers may be customized. Applying a driver intended for a different graphics generation is not a useful fix.

Before launching the game, close applications you do not need. Browsers with many tabs, recording tools, and other resource-heavy background tasks can compete with Fortnite for CPU and memory. Epic’s low-FPS troubleshooting guidance also recommends driver updates and reducing background resource use.
Lower graphics demands in a controlled order
Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance starts with Quality Presets: Low and 3D Resolution: 100%. Apply those settings, test, and then raise settings gradually only if performance allows. This is a good starting point when the game runs poorly on integrated graphics.

- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
If FPS remains low, try reducing the display resolution or 3D Resolution. Rendering fewer pixels can reduce GPU work, but the image will look less sharp. Change one value at a time and keep the setting only if the trade-off is acceptable. Epic’s graphics troubleshooting article covers its recommended starting point.
Try Fortnite Performance Mode
Performance Mode is Fortnite’s built-in option for players with low FPS or less powerful PCs. Epic says it may increase FPS; it is not a guaranteed fix. The mode reduces visual quality to favor performance, so expect a less detailed image.

- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
- Open Fortnite and select Settings.
- Open the Video tab.
- Find Rendering Mode and choose Performance.
- Apply the change and restart Fortnite.
Epic says removing high-resolution textures can save over 15 GB of disk space when using Performance Mode. For the option and its current instructions, see Epic’s Performance Mode help page.
Check power settings and heat when the problem fits
On Windows, a power slider set toward energy savings can limit game and graphics performance. Moving it toward the performance-oriented end may help, but uses more power and can shorten laptop battery runtime; it may also increase heat. The exact power controls available depend on the PC and Windows version.

If Fortnite starts to slow down or fail only after extended play, check whether vents are blocked and whether dust is restricting airflow. Epic recommends improving airflow in that situation. Cleaning is not a guaranteed FPS boost when the system is not overheating.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consider hardware upgrades only for the problem they can address
Epic says that on older machines, an SSD or 6 GB or more of RAM can help the game fit in memory and reduce hitches and stutters. This is separate from the current published minimum of 8 GB RAM and recommended 16 GB; 6 GB is not a replacement for the listed minimum. Neither an SSD nor extra memory is established as a guaranteed way to raise average FPS.
- Storage: If the PC still uses a hard drive, an SSD may help with hitches and stutters. Epic recommends NVMe storage in its recommended specification, but older computers may support a different interface. Check the exact model, form factor, connector, and available bay or slot before buying.
- Memory: More RAM may help a system that is below requirements or constrained by memory. Check the supported memory type, capacity limit, and whether the computer’s RAM is replaceable; these vary by model.
- Dedicated graphics: A dedicated GPU may help balance system load and provide a smoother experience, but feasibility depends on the PC. A desktop needs compatible components such as a power supply, case, and motherboard; thin laptops and systems with soldered components may not permit this upgrade. Official guidance does not establish a universal FPS increase for a particular card.
Intel UHD window-mode crash: use the targeted workaround
Intel documents a Fortnite crash when changing window mode on some Intel UHD Graphics systems running Windows 10 or Windows 11. Its support article, last reviewed September 5, 2024, recommends updating Windows, performing a clean Intel graphics-driver installation, and changing Fortnite’s window mode outside the game. Intel identifies driver version 31.0.101.2128 or later as resolving the described issue for UHD graphics. Check the article and the driver available for your exact hardware before applying the guidance: Intel’s Fortnite window-mode crash support article.
