A “midspan PoE switch” is, strictly speaking, not a switch. The correct term is midspan Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE), usually called a PoE injector. It is a separate device placed between an ordinary non-PoE Ethernet switch and a powered device. The switch carries the data, and the midspan adds power to the same cable. A switch with PoE built in is an endspan.
The definition
Microchip’s technical documentation puts it this way: “An endspan PSE has the PoE integrated inside the Ethernet switch. A midspan PSE, or PoE injector has the PoE in a dedicated system that is placed between a non-PoE Ethernet switch and the powered device.”

“Midspan” therefore describes where the power source sits in the link: in the middle, between the switch and the endpoint. It does not mean the non-PoE switch has gained any PoE circuitry.

The PD might be a wireless access point, an IP camera or an IP phone. The injector is the PSE, and the PD receives power over the Ethernet cable. Cisco’s 2024 training material on PoE basics shows the non-PoE switch, injector and PD as separate parts and stresses that the PSE and PD must be compatible.
A Leviton cabling white paper (“Equipment for Delivering PoE”, EMEA) describes midspans as a way to add PoE when the existing switch lacks it, for example when adding access points or IP phones. This lets you keep a suitable switch rather than replace it only to gain PoE. Leviton also says the midspan should be installed in a standards-compliant facility and not as part of a permanent link. Follow the applicable cabling rules and the product’s installation instructions.

Midspan vs endspan
| Aspect | Midspan (injector) | Endspan (PoE switch) |
|---|---|---|
| Where PoE lives | Separate device between switch and PD | Built into the Ethernet switch |
| Best suited to | Retrofitting PoE onto an existing non-PoE switch | Choosing a PoE switch as the power source |
| Existing switch | Can be kept | Replaced if it lacks PoE |
| Extra device in the link | Yes | No |
What to check before choosing one
Standard and device match
Identify the PD’s required PoE standard and power, then pick a compliant injector that supports it. The word “PoE” alone does not guarantee compatibility, so check both products’ specifications.
Source power versus power at the device
Ubiquiti’s help center lists source-side (PSE) maximums of 15.4 W for IEEE 802.3af, 60 W for 802.3bt Type 3 and 100 W for 802.3bt Type 4. These are PSE output figures, not the power a particular PD receives. Check the maker’s ratings for the exact device and installation. An example model’s wattage is not a standard limit.

Data rate and cabling
The injector must suit your Ethernet link speed and cabling. Microchip notes that midspan variants exist for different PHY rates.
Port count
A single-port injector can serve one endpoint. Multiport midspans exist for several endpoints. Confirm the connection order and installation requirements in the product documentation.

Standards-based versus ambiguous power
Where a listing uses vague PoE wording, confirm the injector and PD are actually compatible. Cisco advises ensuring PSE/PD compatibility.
Example
Axis Communications’ AXIS 30 W Midspan is a manufacturer example. Axis describes it as IEEE 802.3af/at compliant, carrying data while injecting power. It illustrates the category and is not a universal recommendation, so check current availability and compatibility with your device.

Do you need one?
If your switch has no PoE and you need to power an access point, camera or phone over the cable, a midspan injector is the targeted fix. If you are already planning a wider network upgrade, a PoE (endspan) switch is the alternative, as it integrates power and data in one box.
