CodePic turns code into PNG or SVG images, either in a browser app or from the command line with npx codepic. Its author, Hamed, says the browser version has no backend, never uploads your code, and keeps working offline after your first visit. Those are the author’s claims, not the result of an independent audit. This article covers what the tool does, how to use it, what the privacy claims mean in practice, and where it falls short for docs, tutorials, slides and pull request descriptions.
What CodePic does
CodePic is a code screenshot tool: you paste a snippet, style it, and export an image. Hamed describes it in a DEV Community post (dated September 30; the year isn’t shown in the source). The post links to the project repository and the live app. A separate package listing on Socket describes the CLI as a way to turn code into PNG or SVG images from the command line.
Browser workflow
Paste and highlight
The app detects the language automatically and falls back to plain text when it isn’t sure. It has five named themes: GitHub Light, GitHub Dark, Dracula, Nord and One Dark Pro.
Style the card
- Background: gradient, solid colour or transparent.
- Layout: padding, width, font size, line height and window style.
- Emphasis: clicking line numbers highlights lines. There is also a diff-like treatment for added or removed lines.
Export or share
- PNG at 1×, 2× or 3× scale.
- SVG.
- Copy to clipboard.
- A snapshot link that reopens the same code and settings.
Command-line workflow
The npm package is run with npx codepic. According to the Socket package page, which reported version 0.1.1 when it was analysed, it accepts a file or standard input. The output file extension picks PNG or SVG. Listed options cover themes, backgrounds, width, font, line height, line wrapping, title, scale, and highlighted, added or removed lines. It requires Node 22 or newer.

The CLI suits repeatable output, such as regenerating images for a docs set when a snippet changes. Both the version number and the Node requirement can change, so check the package listing before relying on them in a build pipeline.
What the privacy and offline claims mean
The author says CodePic has no backend and that code is never uploaded, stored or logged. Highlighting, layout and export all happen in your browser. After one visit, the app can reportedly load and export without a connection, and it can be installed like an app. The project is described as free and MIT-licensed, so the source can be inspected to verify the behaviour. If your code is sensitive, that matters more than the marketing line.

Share links are not private
A share link stores the code and settings in the URL itself, compressed in the browser. Anyone who has the link can read the code. Keep secrets such as keys, tokens and internal hostnames out of any snippet you share this way. The author says a meter warns you as the URL nears its size limit. If a snippet is too large, the link leaves out the code instead of failing silently.
Exporting an image locally and sharing a link are very different in privacy terms. The image holds only what you can see on screen. The link carries the full source text.

Where it fits
- Docs and tutorials: PNG at 2× or 3× gives sharper images on high-density screens. For SVG, test it in your publishing tool first, given the HTML-in-SVG caveat.
- Slides: a transparent background and a theme matching your deck keep snippets consistent. Line highlighting can direct attention to the relevant lines.
- Pull requests: an image can’t be copied or searched, so paste real code blocks for anything reviewers need to read or run. Use screenshots only for presentation.
- Private code: export locally and don’t use snapshot links.
No independent security review, performance benchmark or comparison with other screenshot tools was found. If you compare tools, the useful axes are whether code leaves your device, offline use, export formats, styling controls, share-link behaviour, CLI support and documented limits.
