What Is a MIDI Sound Module? Definition, How It Works and What to Compare

A MIDI sound module is a sound-generating instrument without a keyboard that turns MIDI messages from a controller or computer into audio. Here is how it works and what to compare.

A MIDI sound module is a sound-generating instrument with no keyboard of its own. It receives MIDI messages from a controller, sequencer or computer and turns them into audio. The MIDI basics article hosted by The MIDI Association (originally from Sound On Sound) puts it this way: “A MIDI sound module is essentially a MIDI instrument without a keyboard.”

Why a module is needed: MIDI itself makes no sound

MIDI 1.0 is a digital message protocol that lets instruments and other devices communicate. Its messages describe things like which note to play, when to change to a different instrument sound (a program change), and how to apply expressive controls. None of that data is audible. A sound source, whether a hardware synthesizer or a software one, has to interpret the messages and generate the sound. A sound module is that sound source in a box with no keys.

How a message affects the sound depends on the receiving instrument’s capabilities. The same note data can produce very different results on two different modules.

Module, keyboard and controller: how they differ

  • Controller: sends MIDI data (a keyboard, pad unit, sequencer or computer) but produces no sound itself.
  • Sound module: produces sound from incoming MIDI data but has no integral keyboard.
  • Keyboard instrument or workstation: combines both roles in one unit.

The term can apply to hardware or software. In everyday use it most often means a standalone hardware unit, typically a rack or desktop box.

MIDIPLUS PianoEngine USB Host MIDI Sound Module
  • MIDIPLUS PianoEngine MIDI Sound Module FUNCTIONS PianoEngine provides standard 128 GM sounds but with improved piano sound and drum sound set
  • Supports up to 64 complex tones and 24bit / 48kHz high-quality audio input and output. Supports MIDI devices with MIDI OUT or MIDI IN or USB output with zero latency.
  • With 128*64 Pixels of LCD display. Support MIDI IN and MIDI OUT , USB Host work simultaneously. One piano plays accompaniment while another plays melody, a true duet. Comes with 3 (A, B, C) preset function buttons which could be shifted easily
  • omes with 100 drum songs. Shortcut buttons: sound, channel, volume, set, save, etc.
  • Comes with a 2500mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery. Able to supplies power to your MIDI device through USB Host (≤500mA).

How a basic setup works

  1. A controller or sequencer sends MIDI data to the module.
  2. The module generates audio according to the channel, program and note messages it receives.
  3. The audio goes through the module’s audio outputs to headphones, powered speakers, a mixer or a recording interface.

The original MIDI 1.0 connection is the five-pin DIN cable, and MIDI data is also carried over other transports such as USB. Which one you use depends on the ports on your particular devices, so check each manual for the MIDI connections, channel settings and audio outputs.

What General MIDI means for modules

General MIDI Level 1 (GM1) defines a minimum configuration for MIDI-controlled sound generators. It assigns familiar instrument names, such as Electric Piano or Oboe, to program numbers. A GM-format MIDI file can therefore call up a broadly similar instrument on any compliant device.

PianoBox Mini General MIDI Sound Module
  • The PianoBox Mini is a great way to add sound to your controller keyboard or eliminate latency when working with your computer. With a built in battery, the PianoBox Mini is the perfect portable General MIDI sound module!
  • Want to use your USB MIDI keyboard without turning on your computer? The PianoBox Mini is the solution.
  • You can connect any USB MIDI keyboard directly to the PianoBox Mini - without the need for your computer! This unique feature allows you to connect the PianoBox Mini to any keyboard - even if it doesn't have MIDI out! Of course, the PianoBox Mini also includes a MIDI input for keyboards or other MIDI devices that have a standard MIDI out port.
  • The PianoBox Mini is designed for portability and includes a built in rechargeable battery, so you don't have to worry about lugging along a power supply. It charges via USB, and can even power your USB MIDI keyboard! Now you can take your USB keyboard and PianoBox Mini anywhere you want to go and make music - no need for your computer or power cables.
  • When working with music software, the PianoBox Mini is a great way to eliminate the latency or delay between when you strike a key on your keyboard and when you hear the sound. Simply use a USB MIDI interface such as the MidiLink Mini to connect the PianoBox Mini to your computer, and use it for playback instead of your computer's soundcard. This will get rid of any delay or latency problems you are having with software such as Sibelius, Finale, PrintMusic, MusicTime, Sonar, Pro Tools, etc.

GM does not define how each patch should sound. Two GM modules will both give you an “Oboe,” but the timbre and quality can differ. The MIDI Association says GM2 superseded GM1 in 1999 and added standardized features and capabilities, while GM1 remains commonly used for Standard MIDI Files.

“Has MIDI” and “is a GM module” are not the same claim. A device can receive MIDI without offering the GM instrument map or the expected response.

What to compare between modules

“MIDI sound module” does not imply any fixed specification. These are the dimensions that differ from model to model:

Feature What it tells you
Sound set and format support Whether it offers GM1, GM2, GS, XG, proprietary patches or a specialized synthesis engine.
MIDI compatibility Supported messages, channels, program and bank selection, and whether it is documented for your files or controller.
Polyphony How many notes can sound at once before voices are cut off.
Multitimbrality Whether different MIDI channels can play different sounds at the same time.
Connections Which MIDI ports and audio outputs it has, and whether they suit the rest of your setup.
Effects and editing Onboard effects, and how easily you can configure sounds and parts.

These are comparison points, not minimum requirements.

  • Power supply: USB Powered, no external power required Operating Systems: Mac OSX, Windows XP and above (no driver needed)

Example: the Hammond GM-1000

Hammond Suzuki’s manual for the GM-1000, a GM module, lists a VASE sound engine, maximum 32-note polyphony and 16-part multitimbrality. It also lists 266 voices (128 GM plus 138 variations), nine drum sets, and reverb and chorus effects. The search result did not establish the manual’s edition date. These figures describe that one model only and are not typical of all modules.

Example: a MIDI instrument that is not a GM module

Roland’s support guidance (dated 2024-09-24) says the JUNO-D6, D7 and D8 cannot be used as GM/GS sound modules. It warns that playback of GM/GS data may involve sound mismatches, drum-kit differences, missing effects and ignored messages. A product having MIDI connectivity does not prove it will play back GM files correctly, so confirm GM or GS support in its documentation.
