It can’t prove the client is fake. JA4 describes the TLS handshake. HTTP/2 behavior is a separate layer. A mismatch between a “Chrome” user-agent string and either layer is a reason to look closer, not a verdict.
What a JA4 fingerprint actually measures
JA4 is a TLS client fingerprint from the FoxIO JA4+ family. It is calculated from the TLS ClientHello, the first message a client sends when it opens an encrypted connection. The ClientHello shows how the client’s TLS library is configured. It doesn’t show the label the client puts on itself.

According to the Apache Traffic Server JA4 plugin documentation, the inputs include the transport protocol, TLS version, whether SNI is present, cipher-suite and extension counts, the first ALPN value, and the cipher suites and extensions themselves.
Reading the three sections of a JA4 string
A JA4 value has three underscore-separated sections. Take the illustrative example t13d1516h2_8daaf6152771_b186095e22b6:
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
| Part | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Section a (readable) | t13d1516h2 |
t = TCP (q would mean QUIC); 13 = TLS 1.3; d = SNI status; 15 = cipher-suite count; 16 = extension count; h2 = first ALPN value (HTTP/2) |
| Section b (hash) | 8daaf6152771 |
Hash of the sorted cipher-suite list |
| Section c (hash) | b186095e22b6 |
Hash of the sorted extension list |
Sorting the lists before hashing matters. Cloudflare says sorting ClientHello extensions reduces the number of unique fingerprints for modern browsers and makes grouping easier. Without sorting, a client that randomizes extension order would produce a different fingerprint on every connection.
Treat the example as an illustration of the format. It isn’t a permanent, canonical Chrome signature, and no mapping of a specific JA4 value to a specific Chrome release has been validated here. FoxIO notes that fingerprints change when applications’ TLS libraries are updated, roughly yearly in its current explanation.

JA4, JA4H and HTTP/2: three different things
The names get blurred, so keep them apart:
- JA4 is TLS client fingerprinting, based on the ClientHello.
- JA4H is HTTP client fingerprinting. FoxIO documents it as a separate method in the same family. It isn’t another name for JA4.
- HTTP/2 fingerprinting is a further layer of observable behavior after TLS completes. Examples are how a client orders and sizes its HTTP/2 settings and how it orders request headers. The JA4 TLS hash doesn’t measure any of this. The
h2in section a only says that HTTP/2 was the first protocol offered through ALPN.
The layers are useful together. A real browser’s TLS stack and HTTP stack are built together, so they tend to look consistent with each other. A tool that copies one layer while leaving the other as its library default can produce a combination that doesn’t match any real browser. That is an inference from how the layers work, not a published accuracy figure. None of the reviewed documentation gives a detection-accuracy rate.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How investigators test a “Chrome” claim
- Note the claim. This is usually the User-Agent header, for example a string naming Chrome.
- Collect the observed TLS fingerprint. Use JA4 from your edge, proxy or log pipeline.
- Compare with known-good traffic. Check the value against fingerprints seen from genuine browsers of that family in your own traffic, not against a single hash from a blog post.
- Add the HTTP layer. Look at JA4H or HTTP/2 behavior to see whether it agrees with the TLS result.
- Add context. Request rate, IP reputation, cookie and JavaScript behavior, and the path being requested all matter.
- Decide proportionately. A mismatch can justify a challenge, rate limit or closer logging. It shouldn’t be the only basis for a permanent block.
Why a mismatch is not proof
- Versions and configurations differ. Legitimate browser releases and settings produce different fingerprints, and an old or new build may not be in your reference set.
- Fingerprints drift. TLS library updates change them (FoxIO).
- Clients overlap. Similar client types can share fingerprints, so a match doesn’t prove identity either.
- Intermediaries hide the original. Proxies and TLS-terminating middleboxes mean the server may be fingerprinting the proxy, not the user’s browser.
- It isn’t attestation. The reviewed sources describe fingerprints as identifiers and analytics signals, not cryptographic proof of which software is running.
When the fingerprint is simply missing
Cloudflare’s JA3/JA4 documentation (last updated 2026-05-06) lists cases in which the data may be absent:

- Certain Worker routing paths.
- TLS session resumption after the initial handshake.
Cloudflare tells implementers to handle missing values explicitly. An empty field is a gap in telemetry. It isn’t evidence of a fake browser or of evasion.

Cloudflare exposes JA3 and JA4 fingerprints for analytics and rule-based actions. Its documentation says they are available only to Enterprise customers that have purchased Bot Management. Check your current plan, because vendor packaging can change.

Apache Traffic Server
The ATS JA4 plugin processes TLS ClientHello messages, writes fingerprints to a log, and can inject headers for later requests on the same connection. Its documented limits:

- It generates no fingerprints for non-TLS connections.
- Its logging can’t be disabled.
- Raw cipher and extension lists aren’t logged. Only the fingerprint is recorded.
Choosing how much weight to give a fingerprint
| Approach | Layer | Strength | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| JA4 alone | TLS ClientHello | Cheap triage clue; stable under extension-order randomization | Drifts with library updates; absent in some traffic; proxies distort it |
| JA4 plus JA4H or HTTP/2 behavior | TLS and HTTP | Cross-layer consistency check | Needs good reference data and logging at both layers |
| Layered assessment with context | Network, HTTP and behavior | Best basis for blocking or challenging | More effort, and still probabilistic |
The Bottom Line
Use JA4 as a clue, not a verdict. Compare it with HTTP-layer evidence and your own baseline of real browser traffic. Treat a missing fingerprint as missing data.
