It can write a magnetic pattern, read one back as an electrical signal, or erase an earlier recording, depending on the head’s function.
How a magnetic tape head works
A common head is built around a coil wound around a ferromagnetic core, with a small gap facing the tape. The gap concentrates the magnetic field where the tape passes the head.

During recording, the input signal varies the current in the coil. That changing current creates a corresponding magnetic field at the gap, which leaves a pattern in the tape’s magnetic coating. During playback, the pattern on moving tape changes the magnetic flux in the head and induces an electrical signal in its coil. The recorder’s electronics amplify and process that signal to recover the recorded information.
The Smithsonian National Museum of American History describes a Brush Company recording-playback head designed around 1950 as containing “a small, specially-shaped electromagnet designed to produce a focused magnetic field.” Its collection record describes how the head’s current varied with the input signal during recording and how the tape’s magnetic field generated a signal in the head during playback.

What the different tape heads do
Record head
The record head converts an electrical signal into a magnetic pattern on tape. The signal’s changing current changes the field at the head gap, encoding the information in the tape’s magnetization.
Playback or reproduce head
A playback head detects changes in the magnetic pattern as the tape moves past it. The induced electrical signal is then amplified and processed. The recording can represent analogue audio or coded digital information; the underlying magnetic recording and playback principle is shared.

Erase head
An erase head reduces or removes a previous recording. In the account from the Society of Broadcast Engineers, it applies a high-frequency magnetic field that decays as the tape passes, leaving the coating demagnetized. See the Society of Broadcast Engineers chapter on videotape.

Are record, playback, and erase heads always separate?
No. A tape machine may use separate heads for recording and playback, or combine those functions in one head. Erasing may be handled by a distinct erase head. The number and arrangement of heads depend on the machine; “three heads” is not a universal design.

Some machines with separate record and playback heads can monitor the signal from the tape shortly after it has been recorded. This is called off-tape monitoring. It is a configuration feature, not by itself proof that one recorder is better than another. The National Audio Company glossary explains the head functions and related terminology in its magnetic-tape glossary.

The term refers to the transducer at the tape path that performs magnetic recording, playback, or erasure. The cited technical descriptions focus mainly on audio and broadcast video tape systems. Different tape formats can use different head geometries and arrangements, so this functional definition does not imply that every machine’s head is built identically.
