A long file name, in Microsoft’s definition, is any file name that goes beyond the old MS-DOS 8.3 naming convention. That is a relative test, not a fixed character count. The length that actually causes an error depends on whether you mean a single file name or the full path to the file, and on the filesystem, operating system, and application involved.
Where the definition comes from
Microsoft’s official Windows documentation, in the article Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces (Microsoft Learn), states: “A long file name is considered to be any file name that exceeds the short MS-DOS (also called 8.3) style naming convention.”

The 8.3 convention allowed a name of up to eight characters, a period, and a three-character extension, as in REPORT01.TXT. Any name that does not fit that pattern is a long file name under Microsoft’s wording. The definition exists to separate modern names from legacy ones. It does not set a maximum length, and it does not tell you when a name will fail.
File name versus path
Most confusion comes from using one term for two different things:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- File name (a single path component): the part after the last folder separator. In
C:Projects2026Client Reportsfinal-version-march.docx, the file name isfinal-version-march.docx. - Path: the entire chain of folders leading to the file, including the drive letter and the file name.
A path can fail for two separate reasons. One folder or the file name can exceed the limit for a single component, or the combined path can exceed a limit set by an operating system interface, an application, or a sync service. Error messages sometimes name only the file, which points to the first cause, and sometimes say the path is too long, which points to the second. Read the wording before changing anything.
The numbers and the layer each one describes
Several figures circulate for Windows, and they describe different layers. Do not add them together or treat one as the limit for the other.

| Limit | Value | What it applies to | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
Traditional Win32 MAX_PATH |
260 characters | Legacy Windows API path behavior for full paths | Microsoft Learn path documentation, last updated 2024 |
Extended-length path form (\? prefix) in Windows APIs |
Approximately 32,767 characters | Full paths where the calling API and path form support it; does not remove component limits | Microsoft Learn path documentation, last updated 2024 |
| Single file name component on NTFS, exFAT, and FAT32 | 255 Unicode characters | One name between folder separators | Microsoft, File System Functionality Comparison, accessed 2026 |
| Maximum path name on NTFS, exFAT, and FAT32 (table value) | 32,760 Unicode characters | Filesystem-level path, with each component still capped at 255 characters | Microsoft, File System Functionality Comparison, accessed 2026 |
| SharePoint and OneDrive on the web | 400 characters | Cloud web path; URL-encoded special characters count toward it | Microsoft Support, accessed 2026 |
| Linux | Limits counted in bytes; component limit depends on the filesystem | Pathnames on Linux systems; query the actual value rather than assuming one | Linux man-pages; use pathconf or fpathconf to query |
| Historical Apple (archived manual) | 255 characters per component; 1,023 characters per pathname | Environment described in the archived manual only | Apple Developer Documentation, archived pathconf(2) manual dated June 4, 1993; historical, not a current macOS limit |
The 32,760 and 32,767 figures come from different documentation contexts, which is why they differ. The 255-character component limit is the one most often hit by a single long name. The 260-character MAX_PATH figure is the one most often hit by deep folder trees.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy Windows still reports 260 characters
Windows 10 version 1607 introduced support for long paths in many common Win32 functions. Using it requires two things at once: the system-level setting (a Group Policy or registry value named LongPathsEnabled) and an application that declares itself longPathAware in its manifest. Enabling the setting alone does not make every program accept long paths.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Microsoft’s OneDrive support article states that File Explorer and Office desktop apps do not currently opt in. Users of those tools may therefore still see the 260-character behavior even on a system where long paths are enabled. The setting is also not a universal fix, because some applications will still reject long paths regardless of configuration.
Why a file can sync locally and fail in OneDrive
A path that is valid on the OneDrive web interface can become too long after syncing, because the local OneDrive folder prefix adds characters to the path on your computer. Microsoft recommends shorter file names and shallower folder structures. If a file exceeds the local desktop limit, Microsoft advises renaming it on the web so the synced copy fits. The 400-character web limit and the local Windows limits are separate, so a file can pass one and fail the other.

Linux and macOS
Linux pathnames are interpreted as sequences of bytes, not characters. A name that looks short but contains accented or non-Latin characters can use more bytes than its visible length suggests. Component length is set by the filesystem, so a name that works on one disk may fail on another. When you need the real value, query it with pathconf or fpathconf rather than relying on a memorized figure.

The Apple values above come from an archived manual dated June 4, 1993. They illustrate how limits were once documented, but they should not be read as the limits on a current Mac. Check the volume and the software in use.

How to diagnose and fix a path that is too long
- Read the error text. A message naming the file or extension points to a single component that is too long. A message about the path points to the combined length of the folders and file.
- Measure the path. Count the full path from the drive letter to the file name, including the folder names. Compare it with 260 characters for legacy Windows behavior and with the component limit of 255 characters.
- Identify the program or service. Determine whether the failure comes from File Explorer, an Office desktop app, the OneDrive client, a browser or the OneDrive web interface, or a third-party program. Each applies different rules.
- Shorten folder names or reduce nesting. This is the most reliable fix, because it works regardless of application support. Moving the project to a shallow folder such as
C:Workoften removes a path problem without renaming any files. - Rename the file on the web if it is a sync issue. If the file is in OneDrive or SharePoint, rename it online, then let the client sync again.
- Enable long paths only when you administer the machine and the application supports it. Turn on
LongPathsEnabledand confirm the app declareslongPathAwarebefore relying on it. Test with a copy of the data first.
Work through these steps in order. Shortening names fixes most cases, and it does not depend on system settings or application support.
