What Is a Live Streaming Encoder? How It Works and Whether You Need One

A live streaming encoder compresses audio and video and sends it to a platform. Learn how software, GPU, and dedicated encoders work, plus YouTube settings to check.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A live streaming encoder converts your camera, microphone, or computer’s audio and video into a compressed digital stream and sends it to a platform such as YouTube. It can be software on your computer, an encoder built into a GPU, or a dedicated hardware device. You may already have what you need: an app such as OBS can encode a stream using your computer’s software or compatible hardware encoder.

What a live streaming encoder does

Raw audio and video are too large and unwieldy to send directly as a live broadcast. An encoder compresses them using a supported codec and settings, then sends the resulting stream to the platform’s ingest endpoint using a supported protocol. The platform receives and processes that incoming feed for viewers. YouTube, for example, transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for people watching on different devices and network connections (YouTube encoder settings).

These functions may be combined in one app or device, but they are distinct jobs:

  • Capture: A camera, microphone, or computer generates the picture and sound.
  • Compose or switch: A streaming application or switcher selects sources and arranges the on-screen production. OBS can manage sources and scenes as well as encoding.
  • Encode: Software or hardware compresses audio and video into a stream.
  • Ingest and distribute: The platform receives the stream, processes it, and delivers it to viewers.

A product may do several of these jobs. Check what a particular app or device actually supports rather than assuming its label describes its whole workflow.

Software, GPU, or dedicated hardware?

Software encoding

Software encoding runs on the computer’s processor. OBS includes x264, a software encoder. It is a practical starting point if your computer can handle encoding at your chosen resolution and frame rate while also running your other applications. The trade-off is that encoding uses CPU resources, which may matter during gaming or a complex production.

Hardware encoding in a GPU

A GPU may include a specialized component that handles video encoding separately from much of the CPU’s work. OBS says modern hardware encoders can provide very good quality with minimal performance impact, while noting that earlier generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding at its stated comparison preset (OBS Project, Hardware Encoding). This is not a universal ranking: results depend on encoder generation, implementation, settings, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Dedicated encoder devices

A standalone encoder is a separate hardware option for workflows where a dedicated appliance is useful. It is not a standard requirement for ordinary livestreaming. Confirm that the exact device supports your sources, desired codec, ingest protocol, resolution, frame rate, and platform settings. Magewell’s Ultra Encode user manual, for example, documents a YouTube streaming workflow; that documentation alone does not establish that a dedicated device is better than a computer for every creator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose

  • Workflow: Decide whether you will use an existing computer, a GPU’s hardware encoder, or a standalone device.
  • Compatibility: Check the encoder’s supported codecs and protocols, along with operating-system and driver requirements.
  • Workload: Account for resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and other work such as gaming or production.
  • Network: Make sure your upload connection can reliably carry the selected stream bitrate.
  • Production needs: Consider how many sources you use and whether portability or a standalone workflow matters.

System requirements alone do not guarantee that a computer can stream or record a particular workload; test your intended setup before relying on it for an event (OBS Project).

Codec, protocol, and encoder: three different things

  • Encoder: The software or hardware that compresses the audio and video and sends the stream.
  • Codec: The format used to compress the stream, such as H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
  • Ingest protocol: The method used to carry the encoded stream from the encoder to the platform, such as RTMPS.

They must work together. YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS and provides settings by codec, resolution, and frame rate (YouTube Help). Requirements differ by platform, so do not treat YouTube’s settings as universal rules.

YouTube encoder settings to check

Use YouTube’s published recommendations as a starting point for a YouTube broadcast, then check the current guidance for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. The following H.264 bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations, not universal requirements. YouTube’s settings page was accessed on October 3, 2026; it has no visible publication date.

Match the bitrate to your connection

Your upload connection must sustain the bitrate you select. YouTube advises testing upload speed and choosing a reliable quality. A speed test is a useful check, but it does not by itself guarantee a stable broadcast. Test with motion and audio similar to the real event, and monitor stream health and platform messages while live.

Choose an ingest protocol that fits

YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest, with differences in supported codecs and latency (YouTube ingest protocol comparison). RTMP supports H.264 and is unencrypted; RTMPS adds encryption and is suitable for ordinary and low-latency streams. HLS supports H.264 and H.265/HEVC, while DASH supports H.264 and VP9. HLS and DASH use segments, which typically results in more latency than RTMP. The best option depends on your encoder’s capabilities, the platform’s requirements, codec, and latency needs.

For YouTube RTMPS, use a valid RTMPS endpoint and path. RTMPS carries RTMP over SSL/TLS; YouTube’s developer guidance specifies port 443 and calls out correct server-hostname/SNI handling. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt data in transit to its servers (YouTube RTMPS ingestion). Keep your stream key private: it is a credential, not a setting to share publicly.

Testing and troubleshooting before and during a stream

  • The stream will not connect: Verify that the selected protocol matches the endpoint, and that the server address and path are correct. For RTMPS, check the required port and hostname/SNI handling in your encoder’s configuration.
  • YouTube reports a stream-setting problem: Compare the codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate against YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance. Confirm that your encoder supports the combination you selected.
  • The picture stutters or the stream becomes unstable: Check whether your upload connection can reliably sustain the chosen bitrate. Test at a lower quality if needed and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • The computer struggles while encoding: Reduce the workload or try a compatible GPU hardware encoder. A hardware encoder’s results depend on its generation and settings; test image quality and system performance with your actual scene.
  • The viewer sees a delay: Check the ingest protocol and the platform’s latency options. Segment-based HLS/DASH typically has more latency than RTMP. YouTube says 4K/2160p streams cannot use its “improve for low latency” option and run at normal latency.

Run a test using representative motion and audio before an important broadcast. During the stream, monitor both the encoder and platform messages so you can distinguish a local performance issue from an ingest or network issue.
