There is no single minimum PC specification that guarantees a smooth live stream. The right setup depends on what you stream, your resolution and frame rate, the encoder you use, your scenes, and your upload connection. A PC that can run OBS may still struggle to play a demanding game and stream it at the same time.

Start with your intended workload, configure OBS and your platform’s stream settings, then test before buying hardware. OBS’s system requirements, dated August 25, 2021, explicitly caution that software compatibility does not guarantee capacity for a particular stream or recording workload.

What PC specs do you need to live stream?

Think in terms of a workload, not a universal minimum CPU, RAM amount, or graphics-card tier. A static presentation or webcam scene is different from a high-frame-rate game with animated browser overlays. OBS says processor demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; gaming adds the work of rendering the game at the same time.

OBS’s published system-requirements page describes compatibility, not a guaranteed gaming-and-streaming configuration. It does not establish one universal PC specification for smooth streaming across games and settings. Current software support and drivers can also change, so check compatibility for the specific hardware and OBS version you plan to use.

Assess the whole workload

  • Content: Webcam or slides generally require less scene and game rendering than a demanding game.
  • Output target: Higher resolution and frame rate can increase both encoding workload and bitrate needs.
  • Scenes: Browser sources, animated overlays, and other effects add composition and rendering work.
  • Connection: A powerful PC cannot compensate for an unstable upload connection.

Should you use CPU or GPU encoding?

OBS provides x264 software encoding and documents hardware encoder paths including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they move encoding work to specialized hardware instead of relying as heavily on the CPU. Availability and capabilities depend on the hardware generation, platform, and drivers.

Encoding path What it changes What to check
x264 software encoding Uses the CPU to encode the stream. Test while running the actual game and scenes; CPU demands vary by settings and workload.
Hardware encoding Uses a supported specialized encoder, which can reduce CPU load. Confirm support and drivers for your device. Encoder generations can differ in image quality at the same bitrate.

Hardware encoding does not eliminate GPU work. OBS still has to compose and render scenes, and a game can consume most of the available graphics capacity. If OBS cannot render frames on time, lower the game’s graphics settings or close other GPU-heavy applications before assuming the encoder is the only problem.

There are platform-specific qualifications. OBS documents hardware streaming with H.264 on Apple Silicon. Its VideoToolbox guidance says streaming is not supported on Intel Macs because of constant-bitrate limitations, so x264 is required for streaming there. Check OBS’s current encoder guidance for your device and software version.

Can your PC game and stream at the same time?

Possibly, but the answer depends on whether the game, OBS rendering, and encoding can all run within the machine’s available capacity at your chosen settings. A game that uses all available GPU capacity can prevent OBS from rendering scenes on time, even when a hardware encoder is enabled.

  1. Choose the game and stream resolution and frame rate you actually intend to use.
  2. In OBS, select an encoder supported by your system, then build the scenes and sources you expect to use.
  3. Run the game with the same graphics settings, scene changes, overlays, audio, and motion you expect during a real stream.
  4. Check OBS’s performance and stream indicators. If rendering or encoding is overloaded, reduce game graphics load, simplify the scene, or lower the output target, then test again.

Do not use a static test scene as proof that a demanding game will stream smoothly. OBS’s performance guidance recommends freeing GPU resources when OBS cannot render frames in time.

What resolution, frame rate, and bitrate should you use?

Choose a target the PC and connection can sustain. YouTube’s published live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for an encrypted connection to YouTube. Follow current platform guidance because settings and supported formats can change.

1080p60 H.265/HEVC or AV1 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p30 H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p30 H.265/HEVC or AV1 4 Mbps 10 Mbps

These are YouTube’s encoder ingest bitrate recommendations, not PC specifications or guaranteed ISP upload-speed requirements. YouTube recommends running a speed test; a speed-test peak is not proof that your connection can sustain the same rate during a broadcast. Leave headroom for normal network variation and other household use.

Higher frame rates can increase the workload. OBS notes that streaming at 60 fps can be taxing compared with 30 fps. If your system or connection struggles, lowering frame rate or resolution can be a more useful first adjustment than replacing a component.

How much upload speed do you need?

Your upload connection must reliably carry the stream bitrate, with room for fluctuations and other traffic. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests starting with a stream bitrate around 75% of total upload speed. That is troubleshooting guidance, not a platform standard or a guarantee that every connection will remain stable.

  1. Run a speed test, as YouTube recommends, and consider the sustained upload result rather than relying on a brief peak.
  2. Set OBS’s bitrate below the capacity you can sustain. If you are diagnosing drops, OBS suggests beginning at about 75% of total upload speed.
  3. Test a private or otherwise controlled stream using the intended resolution, frame rate, and scenes.
  4. If frames drop, compare the symptom with OBS’s rendering and encoding performance indicators to distinguish network trouble from PC load.

When Wi-Fi instability contributes to dropped frames, OBS recommends trying a wired network connection. Ethernet will not fix every cause of dropped frames, but it can remove an unreliable wireless link from the connection path.

How to test a PC before upgrading

  1. Open OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use the wizard as a starting point rather than a guarantee of final performance.
  2. Set the actual target. Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate for your platform. For YouTube, use its current codec and stream-setting guidance.
  3. Recreate a real session. Run the game or application, show the real scenes and overlays, use audio, and include movement and scene changes.
  4. Check what is failing. Rendering or encoding overload points toward system workload; dropped frames associated with an unstable connection point toward network capacity or stability.
  5. Change one thing and retest. Lower game graphics settings or other GPU-heavy work if OBS cannot render on time. Lower bitrate or try wired networking when the connection is unstable.

Testing first helps avoid buying a graphics card or other upgrade for a problem caused by bitrate, Wi-Fi, or an overly demanding game setting.

Common streaming problems and what to try

Symptom Likely constraint First fix to test
OBS cannot render frames on time while a game is running. The game or other applications are consuming too much GPU capacity. Lower in-game graphics settings or close other GPU-heavy work, then repeat the same test.
Stream drops frames or becomes unstable. The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Lower the bitrate and test again; try wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi may be contributing.
Gameplay is smooth but the stream stutters. OBS rendering, encoding, or network performance may be the limiting factor. Check OBS performance indicators and isolate the issue with a controlled test before changing hardware.
A speed test looks adequate but the stream still drops frames. A speed-test peak may not reflect sustained capacity during a broadcast. Reduce the bitrate, account for other network use, and test under real streaming conditions.
Streaming from an Intel Mac using VideoToolbox is unavailable. OBS documents Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming as unsupported because of constant-bitrate limitations. Use x264 for streaming on that platform, as specified in OBS’s guidance.
