OSPF Version 2 (OSPFv2) is a standards-defined example.
What “link state” means
A router’s link state describes the state of its connections to neighboring routers and networks—for example, which interfaces are usable and which neighbors can be reached. Rather than relying only on a neighbor’s already-calculated route choices, routers distribute descriptions of local links so they can each build a topology view.

In OSPFv2, these descriptions are carried in Link State Advertisements (LSAs). The collection of LSAs is called the link-state database. RFC 2328, the OSPFv2 standard, describes each router as maintaining a database of the network’s topology.
How a link-state protocol finds a route
- Describe local links. A router originates one or more LSAs describing relevant parts of its local state.
- Flood the information. Routers distribute LSAs through the routing domain, allowing other routers to learn the topology. In OSPFv2, adjacent routers also synchronize their databases.
- Build a topology database. Each router gathers the information into a link-state database. Routers within the same OSPF area maintain a common database for that area.
- Calculate paths independently. Each router calculates a shortest-path tree rooted at itself using the database. RFC 2328 specifies Dijkstra’s algorithm for this OSPFv2 calculation.
- Derive routes. The router uses its shortest-path tree to determine routes it can use to forward traffic.
The key idea is that routers share topology information, then calculate paths locally from that information. As the topology information changes, routers can update their view and recalculate paths.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Link-state routing is a method, not one protocol
“Link-state” names a routing approach, not a single protocol or packet format. OSPFv2 is one example; its LSAs, areas, database synchronization, and specified shortest-path calculation describe OSPFv2 specifically. Those details should not automatically be attributed to every protocol that uses a link-state approach.
For the formal OSPFv2 definition and mechanics, see RFC 2328: OSPF Version 2, published by the RFC Editor in April 1998.
