That formed-lead geometry distinguishes it from a leadless chip carrier, which connects through pads or metallized terminations at the package edge. The acronym “LCC” is used for both, so check the full package name and the manufacturer’s drawing before choosing a footprint or socket.
What “leaded chip carrier” means
IEC 60194 defines a chip carrier as one “whose external connections consist of leads that are around and down the side of the package.” That wording is reproduced in an EN 61188-5-1 excerpt; it identifies the package by the shape and position of its electrical connections, not by a particular size. IPC-7356 likewise describes four-sided J-lead components, also called leaded chip carriers, as ceramic or plastic packages with terminations extending beyond the package outline.

How PLCC and LCC relate
PLCC: plastic leaded chip carrier
PLCC is the familiar abbreviation for a plastic leaded chip carrier. Its leads are typically J-shaped, curling under the package edge. The same general J-lead arrangement may also be used in a ceramic package, sometimes called JLCC. The material and exact outline are not determined by the broad term “leaded chip carrier.” TI’s package catalog distinguishes ceramic leadless carriers from J-wing leaded packages, which may be plastic or ceramic.
LCC: an ambiguous abbreviation
LCC may stand for either “leaded chip carrier” or “leadless chip carrier.” A leadless carrier has pads or metallized terminations integral to the package body rather than projecting formed leads. Analog Devices’ glossary records both expansions. If a datasheet or parts list says only “LCC,” use the package drawing and full part number to determine which type it means.

- These are Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier (PLCC) Sockets. IC test sockets are devices that test the performance and electrical connection of IC devices to check whether the components work. Surface Mounted Devices have high assembly density and can reduce the volume of electronic products.
- Number of Pins: 32 Pin; Operating Temperature: -40°C to 105°C; Features: Surface Mounted Devices; Color: Brown; Pitch: 1.26mm / 0.05 inch; Size: 19.5x17x4.6mm / 0.8x0.7x0.2 inch (L*W*H); Package Contents: 10 Pcs x PLCC32P IC Sockets
- These sockets are easy to install. They have good electrical resistance, corrosion resistance and heat resistance, which provide a long service life.
- Steps of installation: 1. Solder the sockets on the PCB board; 2. Insert the chips into the IC adapters; 3. Pull out the chips directly after testing.
- Please make sure the chip pitch is the same as the connector pitch.
What to check before choosing a footprint or socket
The generic package name is not enough to identify a compatible board layout or socket. Check the manufacturer’s current datasheet and package drawing for the specific component, including:
- Whether the connections are formed leads or edge pads/terminations.
- Package construction and outline, including the dimensions shown in the drawing.
- Lead arrangement and count, pitch, and other layout details needed for the PCB footprint.
- For a socket, the exact package outline and device compatibility.
A compatible PLCC socket can be used with some devices for testing or replacement, but that does not make every leaded carrier socketable. A general technical glossary describes this socket use; it does not establish compatibility for any particular part. See the PLCC glossary entry.

Why package terminology may vary
Names can differ across standards and supplier catalogs. An IEC 60191-4 amendment excerpt marks “Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier (PLCC)” as an unrecommended term in that classification and gives “P-QFJ” as the official JEITA name there. This is terminology guidance in that standards context; it does not mean manufacturers universally stopped using PLCC. The amendment catalog entry provides that context.
