To center a worksheet on a printed page in desktop Excel, open Page Layout > Margins > Custom Margins, then check Horizontally and Vertically under Center on page. The setting affects print layout, not how cell contents are aligned on screen. Preview the sheet at File > Print before printing.
Center a worksheet in desktop Excel
- Select the worksheet you want to print. To apply the setting to several sheets at once in Windows, select adjacent sheet tabs with Shift or non-adjacent tabs with Ctrl. You can also choose all sheets from a sheet-tab context menu. Selected sheets are grouped; click an unselected tab or choose Ungroup Sheets when you are finished to avoid making unintended changes across the group.
- Go to Page Layout > Margins > Custom Margins.
- In the Page Setup dialog, find Center on page. Check Horizontally and Vertically to center the worksheet in both directions. To center in only one direction, check only that option.
- Choose File > Print to inspect the preview before printing. In Windows, select Show Margins in Print Preview to display margin handles; drag them if you need to adjust the margins.

Center a worksheet in Excel for Mac
- Select the worksheet you want to print.
- Choose Page Layout > Margins > Custom Margins.
- In Page Setup, under Center on page, select Horizontally and Vertically, or select just one for one-direction centering.
- Open File > Print and review the preview.

Can Excel for the web center a worksheet this way?
Microsoft’s support guidance says Excel for the web does not support setting page margins. Because this centering method is part of the margin settings, use desktop Excel to set it. Some Page Setup options are available on the web app’s Page Layout tab, but that does not provide the margin-based centering procedure described here. See Microsoft’s margin guidance.

Why a printout may still look off-center
Centering positions the printable worksheet content within the margins; it does not resize the content or decide how it is divided among pages. Page Setup handles centering, scaling, paper size, orientation, print area, and repeated print-title rows or columns as separate controls. Microsoft explains these controls in its Page Setup overview.
- Confirm the selected sheet: Make sure you changed the worksheet you intend to print. If several tabs are grouped, verify which sheets are selected.
- Check the print area: A defined print area determines what is included in the output, so confirm it covers the content you expect.
- Review paper size and orientation: The selected paper and portrait or landscape orientation affect the available page space.
- Check scaling and page breaks: If the content spans multiple pages, centering changes positioning; scaling and page breaks control sizing and distribution.
- Inspect the preview: In Windows Print Preview, Show Margins lets you see and adjust margin handles. Microsoft’s worksheet printing guide covers previewing before printing.
Where Excel saves the setting
In Windows Excel, margin settings defined for a worksheet are saved with that worksheet when you save the workbook. Microsoft notes that this worksheet setting does not let you change the default page margins for new workbooks. See Microsoft’s margin instructions.
