What Is a Keycap Puller?

A keycap puller lifts removable keycaps from a keyboard for replacement or cleaning. It removes the cap, not the switch, and the right method depends on the keyboard.

A keycap puller is a small tool that lifts removable keycaps off a keyboard so you can replace them or reach the surface underneath for cleaning. It removes the cap, not the switch; a separate switch puller is used for removing a compatible hot-swappable switch.

What a keycap puller does

The tool grips or hooks beneath a keycap so you can lift it from its switch. You may also see the name written as “key cap puller.” If you are trying to identify an unfamiliar keyboard accessory, a small ring-shaped piece with two clips may be one: a Corsair answer on a Best Buy product page identifies that kind of item as a keycap puller used for cleaning or replacing keycaps.

Use one only with keycaps that are designed to be removed, and follow the instructions for your keyboard model. A keycap puller is not a switch puller. NACON’s CL-7500M instructions distinguish the two: the key cap puller removes the cap, while a switch puller removes the switch.

Common keycap puller types

Retail listings show at least two forms: wire-style and plastic pullers. Max Keyboard lists a steel-wire tool and a separate plastic keycap-removing puller; its description says the wire arms bend outward to fit mechanical-switch keycaps.

Those listings do not establish that either form is safer, more durable, or compatible with every keyboard. Check that the tool fits the keycaps you intend to remove, and use the keyboard maker’s directions rather than assuming the same technique works on all keyboards.

How to remove a keycap

  1. Check your keyboard’s manual for the keys that may be removed and the recommended method. ASUS’s GK2000 Horus RGB guide, for example, specifies using a key cap puller for the keycaps it identifies for replacement.
  2. For the Northgate OmniKey, hold the plastic top of the puller and fit its arms over the target key until they snap beneath it.
  3. On that model, pull straight up with firm pressure. The Northgate OmniKey User’s Guide warns: “When the arms snap into place under the key, pull straight up with firm pressure. Don’t wiggle the puller from side to side. This will damage the key.” This is the OmniKey’s instruction, not a universal procedure for every keyboard.

If your keyboard’s manual does not identify removable keys or explain how to remove them, do not assume a puller is appropriate for its key mechanism.
