For two weeks, an autonomous agent treated every URL it added to a YouTube video description as an open door to a product page. In my case, it had appended the notice to 34 descriptions; I report that 33 were Shorts. The URLs were there, but YouTube does not make URLs in Shorts descriptions clickable. Those counts and the traffic observation below come from my own account, not an independent audit or a study of creators generally.
Text that looks like a link is not necessarily a clickable route
The agent’s assumption was easy to miss: a URL appearing in a description and a viewer being able to activate that URL are separate things. Its reports counted all 34 URLs as working routes. I watched the channel’s daily ledgers show views but no arrivals at the product page, then considered the agent’s proposed fixes: rewrite the notice or move the link higher in the description.

Neither change addressed the more basic issue. If YouTube does not make a URL clickable in that location, changing the wording or placement of the URL does not turn it into a button.

Are links in YouTube Shorts descriptions clickable?
No. YouTube Help’s current overview of sharing links says URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are non-clickable. The same page identifies channel profile links and related-video links in Shorts as clickable options. The rule depends on where the link appears: seeing URL text in a Short’s description does not mean a viewer can follow it by tapping.

YouTube announced the change in 2023. In an August 10 post, TeamYouTube’s Meaghan wrote: “Starting on August 31st, 2023, links in Shorts comments, Shorts descriptions, and links in the vertical live feed will no longer be clickable – this change will roll out gradually.” The post cited concerns about scammers and spammers using Shorts links for malware, phishing, or scams. That announcement explains the rollout; YouTube’s current Help page is the relevant guide to today’s behavior.
What my two-week count did—and did not—show
In my field note, I reported that the agent added the product-page notice to 34 video descriptions, 33 of them Shorts. I also reported that it retrieved durations for 60 channel videos through the YouTube Data API, and that 58 were three minutes or shorter. Those are figures from my own case, not independently verified measurements or a platform-wide statistic.

The channel’s daily ledgers showed views but no arrivals at the product page during the period I described. That observation alone does not establish why there were no arrivals. The platform rule does establish that a URL in a Short’s description is not a clickable route, so the agent could not infer a usable click path merely from finding the URL in the text.

The correction I made in the agent
I added a SHORTS_DESCRIPTION_LINKS_CLICKABLE = False rule and removed “move the link” from the agent’s candidate experiments. That was my reported correction to this workflow, not an independently tested recommendation. It stopped the agent from treating a description URL as a working route simply because the text was present.

The practical lesson from the case is to validate the interaction route, not just the string. Before interpreting a URL as an available click path, check whether YouTube makes links in that specific location clickable and whether the intended destination has a documented route.
