A keycap is the removable top attached to a keyboard switch—the part your finger presses. To choose replacements, check compatibility first: the switch stem, keyboard layout, key sizes, bottom-row dimensions, and stabilizer mounts. Then compare material, legend construction, profile, and lighting based on your preferences.
What to check before buying replacement keycaps
A set can be described as “MX-compatible” and still fail to cover every key on a particular keyboard. Confirm both that the caps fit the switch stems and that the kit includes the right sizes for your board.

- Identify the switch stem. Check your keyboard’s specifications or the switch itself, then compare its stem with the keycap set’s compatibility details. A cross-shaped MX-style stem is common, but stem fit alone does not ensure a complete layout match. CORSAIR, for example, says its set can fit non-CORSAIR keyboards when they have a standard bottom row, MX-stem switches, and MX-style stabilizers (CORSAIR compatibility information).
- Match the layout and key sizes. Check the specific layout named by the manufacturer and make sure the kit includes the widths you need, especially for the spacebar and modifier keys. A set made for a full-size US layout may not cover a compact or regional layout.
- Check the bottom row and stabilizers. Bottom-row keys can differ in width, and larger keys may use stabilizers. Compare those dimensions and mounts with your keyboard rather than assuming every key in a compatible set will fit.
- Confirm what the kit contains. Read the included-key list and the stated keyboard compatibility. For example, Razer specifies 120 keycaps for either a US 104-key or UK 105-key layout; those listed layouts do not establish coverage for other boards (Razer PBT Keycap Upgrade Set).
Keychron’s K2 illustrates why checking individual sizes matters: Keychron says normal MX-style keycaps fit the keyboard, but notes that some third-party sets may not include the right key sizes (Keychron K2 keycap compatibility).
How material and construction affect keycaps
PBT and ABS
PBT and ABS are common keycap plastics, but the material name by itself does not tell you which set is better. Compare the product’s stated construction, surface texture, finish, and other specifications. NZXT discusses typical differences in finish, texture, and wall thickness while cautioning against inferring overall quality from material or price alone (NZXT key switch and keycap compatibility).

Double-shot legends and backlighting
“Double-shot” describes a molding method: the legend and the body of the keycap are separate pieces of plastic. CORSAIR describes this construction as supporting clear lettering and durable legends, but that description is not an independent comparison of every double-shot set. If you want light to shine through the letters, check that the product specifically has translucent legends. Razer, for example, specifies translucent legends on its cited upgrade set; the feature should not be assumed from “double-shot” alone (CORSAIR double-shot explanation; Razer product specifications).
How to choose a keycap profile
Profile refers to the shape and height of the caps across the keyboard. Names such as OEM, Cherry, SA, and DSA identify different profiles, but the available manufacturer guidance does not establish one as universally best or prove a comfort ranking.

If you are unsure, your keyboard’s stock profile is a practical reference: choosing a similar shape keeps the feel closer to what you already use. Treat that as a preference-based starting point, not a guarantee of better ergonomics. Keychron says the K2 uses OEM-profile caps and that normal MX-style keycaps fit it, subject to checking the set’s key sizes (Keychron K2 support article).

Use a keycap puller where appropriate and follow your keyboard manufacturer’s removal instructions. Before fitting replacements, check that each cap is meant for its position and aligns with the switch stem; do not force a cap that does not seat correctly.
