What Is a Hybrid Control System? Definition, Examples, and Models

A hybrid control system models continuous change and discrete decisions together—and explains how each affects the other.

A hybrid control system combines continuous change with discrete decisions or events, and models how they affect one another. In a thermostat, for example, room temperature changes continuously while control logic switches the heater on or off.

What makes a control system hybrid?

The defining feature is the interaction between two kinds of behavior: continuous dynamics, such as a physical quantity changing over time, and discrete dynamics, such as a decision, mode change, or event. The Cambridge handbook chapter by W. P. M. H. Heemels, D. Lehmann, J. Lunze, and B. De Schutter puts it simply: “Wherever continuous and discrete dynamics interact, hybrid systems arise.” The chapter introduction describes this combination in systems where logic and embedded control act alongside continuous physical processes.

Calling a setup “analog plus digital” is not enough to explain why it is hybrid. The important question is whether discrete decisions or modes interact with continuous system dynamics. A digital computer connected to a physical device, for instance, is not usefully characterized by the label alone; the model needs to represent how the computer’s decisions affect the device and how the device’s evolving state can affect those decisions.

How do flow and jump describe hybrid behavior?

A common formal vocabulary separates evolution into flows and jumps. Flow means that the system’s state evolves continuously over time. A jump is a discrete transition, such as changing an operating mode or resetting a continuous state.

In a flow-and-jump model, a flow map describes how the state evolves while it is in a flow set; a jump map describes the transition allowed in a jump set. The particular equations, switching conditions, and reset rules depend on the system being modeled. This vocabulary is one useful formal approach, not a single notation required for every hybrid system. Springer’s reference entry on hybrid control systems outlines these concepts.

Thermostat example: continuous temperature, discrete heater state

A room thermostat makes the two behaviors easy to distinguish. The room temperature changes continuously; the heater is either on or off, and the thermostat’s logic switches between those states. The temperature and the heater mode belong in one account of the system because the mode affects heating, while the temperature informs the control decision. Ricardo G. Sanfelice’s Hybrid Feedback Control uses a thermostat as an illustrative example.

A model that describes only temperature change leaves out the on/off logic. A model that describes only the heater’s two states leaves out the room’s continuous temperature evolution. The hybrid description accounts for both and their interaction.

Hybrid system, hybrid controller, and hybrid closed loop are different terms

These related terms refer to different parts or arrangements of a control problem:

  • Hybrid dynamical system: a system whose evolution includes continuous flows and discrete jumps.
  • Hybrid controller: an algorithm that combines continuous-time and discrete-time controller behavior.
  • Hybrid closed loop: the connected plant-and-controller system when at least one of those components is hybrid.

The distinction matters because a controller can be hybrid, the physical plant can be hybrid, or the overall feedback arrangement can be hybrid because of either component. Springer’s reference entry distinguishes the controller from the closed-loop system.

Where are hybrid control systems used?

Hybrid modeling is relevant wherever continuous physical behavior and discrete logic need to be considered together. Examples identified by the IEEE Control Systems Society include aircraft flight management, transportation, robotic vehicles, and human-automation systems. An introductory discussion in IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control also names manufacturing, communication networks, autopilot design, computer synchronization, traffic control, and industrial process control. These are application areas, not a claim that every system in those fields must be modeled as hybrid.

Choosing a model depends on the job

There is no universally best hybrid-system notation. Different formalisms capture different kinds of switching, continuous evolution, and state resets, and they can vary in modeling power and complexity. A useful choice depends on what behavior must be represented and what the model will be used to do, such as analyze or verify behavior or synthesize a controller. The IFAC survey of hybrid-system modeling and control discusses this range of approaches and tasks.

  • Can the model express the continuous state evolution and the discrete modes or events that matter?
  • How does it represent switching conditions and any state resets?
  • Does its modeling power fit the intended analysis or control task?
  • Will the resulting model be manageable for analysis or controller design?

For an introduction focused on modeling, analysis, and control, the Cambridge University Press Handbook of Hybrid Systems Control is an advanced reference.
