A TV antenna can replace subscription access to local broadcast stations only if those stations reach your home and you can receive them reliably. It cannot replace Philo’s paid channel lineup or Hulu’s streaming library. Philo says it does not carry local channels and recommends an antenna as a supplement; Hulu + Live TV includes local channels in some markets. The title’s $15 used-antenna purchase and cancellation are a personal experience, not a result established by the available service and government sources.
What a TV antenna can replace
An antenna receives over-the-air (OTA) television signals available at your location. With a compatible TV digital tuner, it may bring in local broadcast stations without a monthly TV-service subscription. Which stations you can receive—and whether reception is dependable—depends on your home and antenna setup.

That makes an antenna a possible substitute for the local broadcast channels in a paid package, not for the whole package. It does not provide a streaming library, on-demand programs, or subscription networks. The Federal Trade Commission warns that antennas do not provide premium channels such as HBO or AMC for free; those require cable, satellite, or online content services. Does Philo have local channels?
No. Philo says it does not currently carry local channels and suggests using an antenna to get local broadcasts. - Check the FCC reception map for your home. Enter your location in the FCC Digital TV Reception Maps. The estimates are a starting point, not a promise that a particular indoor antenna will receive every listed station.
- Account for the map’s assumptions. The FCC’s signal-strength model assumes an outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground. The agency warns that indoor reception can vary significantly; terrain, buildings, trees, weather, antenna placement, and equipment can affect results.
- Test the antenna where you plan to use it. Connect it to a TV with a digital tuner, place it in its intended position, and run the TV’s channel scan. Check that the stations you care about appear and remain watchable—not just that the map predicts coverage.
- Make the cancellation decision after the test. Compare the stations actually received with the channels and programs you watch through each service. If a station is missing or reception is unreliable, an antenna may not replace that part of your current setup.
The FTC also advises consumers to be skeptical of exaggerated antenna and amplifier claims and points to the FCC reception maps as a way to check likely reception.

Choose the setup around what you watch
| Setup | What it can provide | What it cannot provide | Key check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antenna alone | OTA stations available at your location, if reception and equipment allow. | Paid channel packages or a streaming library. | Test the channels and reception in your home. |
| Philo plus antenna | Philo’s subscription lineup plus local broadcasts the antenna can receive. | Local channels through Philo itself, according to Philo’s help page. | Decide whether you need both the paid lineup and local stations. |
| Hulu + Live TV | Streaming service content and local channels where Hulu makes them available. | Local channels in markets where they are unavailable; availability varies by location. | Check the ZIP-code lineup and current subscription terms. |
Before dropping a service, list the local stations, paid channels, shows, on-demand programs, and sports you actually use. Then check which are available through an antenna, which remain in a paid service, and whether the antenna test is reliable enough for your household. A lower bill is useful only if the replacement still covers what you watch.
