A hub-and-spoke model is a network arrangement in which several peripheral nodes, called spokes, connect to a central node, called the hub. The hub links or coordinates the spokes; the exact way traffic, services, or responsibility flows depends on the field and implementation.
What “hub and spoke” means
Picture a bicycle wheel: the hub sits in the center, and spokes extend outward to the rim. In a hub-and-spoke network, the hub is the central connection point and each spoke is a peripheral node connected to it. The spokes do not necessarily connect directly to one another.

The term describes a structure, not a single set of operating rules. In computer networks, nodes may be offices, virtual networks, or routing devices; in transportation, they may be airports and routes; in a school partnership, they may be schools sharing coordination. The role of the hub and the consequences of using one differ by context.
How it differs from a mesh network
In a mesh, nodes have direct connections to multiple other nodes. In a hub-and-spoke arrangement, spokes connect through a central point. Geography of Transport Systems distinguishes these from other network forms, including linear and tree arrangements (The Geography of Transport Systems: Hub-and-Spoke Network).
#1 Best Overall
| Consideration | Hub and spoke | Mesh |
|---|---|---|
| Direct connections | Each spoke connects to the hub; direct spoke-to-spoke links may be absent. | Nodes connect directly to multiple other nodes. |
| Growth in connection complexity | Adding spokes can avoid establishing a direct link between every pair. | Direct links and their management can grow more complex as the number of nodes increases. |
| How communication flows | Where spokes lack direct links, communication between them must pass through the hub. | Nodes can communicate over direct links when those links exist. |
| Central services or control | A central point can make shared routing, services, or policy easier to organize. | Control and services can be distributed, depending on the design. |
| Hub failure or congestion | As an architectural inference, a failed or overloaded hub can affect multiple spokes that depend on it. | A mesh may offer alternate paths if they are built and available; the actual resilience depends on its design. |
The connection pattern alone does not establish performance or reliability. Those outcomes depend on implementation, capacity, redundancy, and traffic.
What it means in computer networking
In networking, a hub-and-spoke design connects separate locations or networks through a central routing point. It can reduce the number of peer relationships that must be configured and provide a place to apply shared services or policies. The trade-off is that traffic between spokes may have to take a longer path through that central point.
Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN example
Cisco’s Catalyst SD-WAN documentation for releases 26.x and later describes a specific configuration: spokes receive route information for hubs rather than for other spokes, and spoke-to-spoke traffic passes through a transport gateway. Cisco says this reduces the number of spoke peers and allows centralized firewall-policy application; the documented topology does not support on-demand direct spoke tunnels. Cisco summarizes the routing behavior this way: “All spoke-to-spoke traffic flows through the transport gateway, which re-originates routes for each spoke.” (Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN: Hub-and-Spoke Configuration, updated September 28, 2026.)

AWS cloud-network example
AWS’s March 31, 2022 guidance discusses hub-and-spoke connectivity among VPCs and on-premises networks. It recommends that approach when connecting more than two network address spaces in that context; direct connection can work for two, while mesh complexity increases as networks grow. AWS presents Transit Gateway as one example for routing among multiple VPCs or VPN-connected networks. This is AWS guidance for its described architecture, not a universal threshold for choosing a topology (AWS: Building a Scalable and Secure Multi-VPC Network Infrastructure).
Examples beyond computer networks
School partnerships in England
England’s Department for Education describes a hub-and-spoke school partnership as a small group generally involving no more than four or five schools, with one school acting as lead. The lead school may coordinate activities, host events, or contribute resources, while partners share strategic responsibility. The guide describes a partnership model in England; its group size is descriptive guidance, not a measured universal limit (Department for Education: Partnership Models in the School System, updated October 19, 2022).
Air transportation
Airlines can organize routes around hub airports that connect to outlying destinations. A NASA proceedings record published October 1, 2004, reported that the then-current U.S. hub-and-spoke air transportation system was reaching saturation. That is historical context from 2004, not an assessment of present-day aviation capacity (NASA Technical Reports Server: 2004 proceedings record).

When the model is useful—and what to check
Hub and spoke can be useful when many peripheral nodes need to connect through shared routing, services, or coordination. Before choosing it for a technical network, check whether the hub has enough capacity, what happens if it becomes unavailable, and whether spoke-to-spoke traffic must pass through it. Also confirm whether the implementation permits direct spoke connections or alternate routes; the topology name alone does not answer those questions.
Best Value
For nontechnical partnerships, the same structural idea means a lead or central organization coordinates several partners. It does not imply that all responsibilities belong to the lead or that every partner relationship works identically.
