Often, yes: you can try starting the PC from its existing Windows drive after replacing the motherboard and CPU. A reinstall is not automatically required, but a successful boot is not guaranteed. Activation is a separate issue: a motherboard change may cause Windows to require reactivation even if the existing installation starts normally.
Before you remove the old motherboard
Prepare for both possibilities: Windows may boot from the old drive, or you may need to recover files or reinstall. Make sure you can access a backup independently of that drive.

1. Back up important files
Copy important files to external storage or a cloud service, then verify that you can open the backup from another device or location. Microsoft recommends backing up personal files before reinstalling Windows: Reinstall Windows with the installation media.

Before the swap, open Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Activation in Windows 10. Note whether Windows is activated and which edition is installed, such as Home or Pro. Check whether activation is through a digital license or a product key, and keep any applicable key available.

If you use a digital license, link it to your Microsoft account before changing hardware and confirm that the Activation page shows the link. Microsoft says this account association enables the hardware-change Activation troubleshooter. Its guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 1607 or later: Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.
3. Secure your BitLocker recovery key
If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, retrieve and safely store the recovery key before changing the motherboard, TPM, or UEFI settings. A replacement motherboard can mean a different TPM context, and some firmware or configuration changes can require BitLocker recovery. Do not clear or reset a TPM while encrypted data is involved unless you have confirmed you can recover access. Microsoft discusses these risks in its BitLocker FAQ.

4. Prepare the new board’s support information
Have the motherboard manual and the manufacturer’s chipset and network drivers available. This can help if Windows starts but does not immediately recognize all devices or connect to the internet. Confirm the selected board fits the CPU socket, memory, case, and other parts in your build.
After installing the motherboard and CPU
1. Try the existing Windows drive
Connect the drive that contains Windows and attempt a normal startup. Let device detection finish if Windows loads. There is no guarantee that an existing installation will boot across every motherboard, storage configuration, firmware setting, or driver setup.

2. Install the appropriate drivers if Windows starts
Use the motherboard maker’s support page to install the appropriate chipset and network drivers. Then check Device Manager for unrecognized devices and run Windows Update. If Windows remains unstable, check the board manual and firmware settings before deciding whether a reinstall is needed.
3. Check activation separately
Once Windows is online, check its Activation page. Microsoft explains that a significant hardware change, such as replacing a motherboard, can leave Windows unable to find a matching license and require reactivation: Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.

If Windows is not activated and you linked a digital license to your Microsoft account, use the troubleshooter:
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Activation. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot. This option is available only when Windows is not activated.
- Select I changed hardware on this device recently and sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the license.
- Choose the current device from the list and select Activate.
If activation relies on a product key, you may need to enter the same key in Activation settings. Whether a license can be transferred depends on its licensing circumstances; do not assume every preinstalled OEM license transfers to replacement hardware. For unresolved activation errors, contact Microsoft Support rather than using unofficial activation tools.

When to keep the installation and when to reinstall
Keep the existing installation if it boots reliably and your applications and settings work as expected. Reinstalling is a reasonable next step if Windows will not boot, or if problems persist after appropriate driver and firmware checks. It can also suit someone who prefers a fresh software setup, but it requires time to restore applications and settings.
Before reinstalling, make sure your backup is usable and install the Windows edition your license covers. A Home license does not itself authorize installing Pro. Microsoft describes in-place upgrade and clean installation as distinct approaches in its Windows installation-media guidance.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Windows boots and is stable: Keep the installation, install the board’s drivers, and check activation.
- Windows boots but is not activated: Use the hardware-change troubleshooter if your linked digital license is eligible, or enter the applicable product key.
- Windows will not boot or remains unstable: Check the new board’s firmware and drivers; if the issue persists, consider reinstalling after confirming your backup and license edition.
- BitLocker requests recovery: Use the recovery key you saved before the hardware change; avoid clearing TPM settings without a recovery plan.
