Your computer, tablet, thin client, or browser acts as the access endpoint; the desktop’s operating system and applications run elsewhere. It is a delivery model, not a single product or one fixed technical design.
What does “hosted virtual desktop” mean?
In a hosted virtual desktop, a provider or an organization hosts the desktop workload on remote infrastructure. The user connects through a client or browser, which sends input and displays the remote session. The endpoint does not have to run the desktop applications locally.

Microsoft Learn defines Azure Virtual Desktop as “a desktop and app virtualization service that runs on Azure.” That is one example of the broader category, not a definition limited to Microsoft’s service. Microsoft Learn: Azure Virtual Desktop overview

Not always. “Virtual desktop infrastructure” (VDI) commonly refers to centrally hosted desktop operating systems, often running in virtual machines. In everyday usage, however, product labels and boundaries vary. Desktop hosting can also use session-based services, where users access sessions on a shared server, or deliver selected applications instead of a complete desktop.

For that reason, treat “hosted virtual desktop” as a broad description and check the architecture behind a particular service. Microsoft’s desktop-hosting reference covers both virtual desktops and Remote Desktop Services session desktops. Microsoft Learn: Desktop hosting reference architecture
How does a hosted desktop work?
A working service combines more than a remote screen. An IT team or provider prepares operating-system and application images, supplies remote compute capacity, configures identity and access, connects storage and networks, and makes a client or browser route available to users. Monitoring and ongoing image, application, and capacity management are also part of the system.

For example, Azure Virtual Desktop uses components including host pools, session hosts, application groups, and workspaces. Its reference architecture also covers networks, identity, storage, endpoints, and monitoring; other services organize these functions differently. | Model | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Personal or persistent desktop | A desktop is assigned to an individual and can retain that user’s environment. | Ask how settings, files, and personalization are retained during maintenance or replacement. Azure Virtual Desktop and Amazon WorkSpaces document personal desktop options. Microsoft Learn AWS WorkSpaces Administration Guide |
| Pooled or non-persistent desktop | Users draw on shared or ephemeral capacity, typically with a standardized environment. | Confirm what happens to settings and files at sign-out and where user profiles are stored. Azure Virtual Desktop documents pooled resources; AWS WorkSpaces Pools are non-persistent. Microsoft Learn AWS WorkSpaces Administration Guide |
| Multi-session desktop | Multiple users can share a session host or pooled capacity, depending on configuration. | Check that the workload and applications support the design and that capacity is sized for concurrent users. Azure Virtual Desktop supports multi-session configurations. Microsoft Learn |
| Published application (RemoteApp) | Selected applications are delivered remotely without presenting a complete desktop environment. | Useful when users need particular applications rather than a full remote workspace. Azure Virtual Desktop supports RemoteApp delivery. Microsoft Learn |
| Single-user cloud PC | A dedicated cloud desktop is assigned to one user. | Compare its lifecycle and management with pooled or multi-session designs. Microsoft describes Windows 365 as a single-user alternative to Azure Virtual Desktop’s multi-session model. Azure Architecture Center |
These are separate design dimensions: whether a desktop is personal or pooled, whether it persists, and whether it supports one or multiple sessions are not interchangeable questions.

How is it different from a local desktop or app virtualization?
- Local desktop: The computer runs its operating system and applications on its own hardware. With a hosted desktop, remote infrastructure runs the desktop workload, while the endpoint handles input, display, and network access.
- Published application: A remote service presents particular applications rather than a complete desktop. This can meet a narrower need, but it is not the same user experience as logging into a full desktop.
Some application-delivery designs centrally manage operating-system or application images and stream access to endpoint devices. That is a related pattern, not a requirement for every hosted desktop. AWS Well-Architected End User Computing Lens
What are the advantages and trade-offs?
Centralized delivery can help organizations standardize desktops or applications across different endpoint devices and manage images and access from a central environment. Services may also provide tools for scaling and administration. These capabilities can be useful, but they do not by themselves establish that a deployment will cost less, be safer, or feel faster.

- Network dependence: Responsiveness depends on network quality as well as service configuration and workload. A connection problem can interrupt access to the remote environment.
- Ongoing operations: Someone still needs to manage identity, images, applications, storage, capacity, monitoring, updates, and recovery.
- Variable costs: Total cost depends on licensing, compute and storage use, networking, billing method, region, and how resources are used. AWS documents monthly or hourly billing choices for WorkSpaces, but a billing option alone does not establish total cost for a particular organization.
- Configuration-dependent security: Central hosting does not automatically make a deployment secure. Access controls, authentication, data location, encryption, recovery, and whether users can redirect data to local devices all matter.

What should you compare when evaluating options?
- Assignment and persistence: Is each user assigned a personal desktop, or do users share pooled capacity? What happens to files and settings when a session ends?
- Delivery: Do users need a complete desktop or just selected applications? Which operating systems and application requirements are supported?
- Workload: What CPU, memory, graphics, storage, concurrency, and network-latency needs must the design meet?
- Identity and integration: How will authentication, multifactor authentication, endpoint management, directory services, and access to corporate resources work?
- Operations: Who maintains images, applications, profiles, session hosts, monitoring, backups, updates, and scaling?
- Security and resilience: What access controls, encryption, data-location rules, recovery objectives, and local-device redirection policies are required?
- Commercial terms: Check licensing, compute and storage charges, network costs, user billing, region, and expected usage. Exact rates and total cost require provider-specific verification.
Azure Virtual Desktop and Amazon WorkSpaces illustrate how different the options within this category can be. Azure Virtual Desktop documentation covers single-session and multi-session configurations, RemoteApp, personal desktops, scaling, and client or browser access. AWS describes Windows and Linux WorkSpaces, persistent Personal desktops, non-persistent Pools, client or browser access, and monthly or hourly billing choices. Neither example establishes availability, eligibility, or cost for every region or user case. Microsoft Learn: Azure Virtual Desktop overview AWS WorkSpaces Administration Guide

Is Azure Virtual Desktop classic retiring?
Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop overview states that Azure Virtual Desktop classic retires on September 30, 2026, after which connections to classic resources will be blocked. Microsoft advises migrating remaining classic resources to Azure Resource Manager-based host pools before that date. This notice applies to the classic service model, not Azure Virtual Desktop ARM deployments or hosted desktops generally. Because the retirement date is close, check Microsoft’s current overview for status and guidance. Microsoft Learn: Azure Virtual Desktop overview
