What Is a Horizontal Search Engine? Definition and Examples

A horizontal search engine covers many web topics; a vertical search engine specializes in a category such as images, jobs, travel, or news.

A horizontal search engine is a general-purpose service that searches across many topics on the web. A vertical search engine, by contrast, focuses on a particular category or format—such as travel, jobs, images, or news. The terms describe the breadth of a service’s coverage, not a fundamentally different way of finding and ranking information.

What does “horizontal search engine” mean?

A horizontal search engine is designed to return general results across categories of web information rather than limiting results to one subject. The European Commission defines general search as covering any category of information on the web; a US House Judiciary Committee report describes horizontal engines as aiming to retrieve a comprehensive list of general search results. European Commission, 2016; US House Judiciary Committee, 2020.

“Horizontal” does not mean that a service contains every page or searches every possible source. For example, Google describes crawling the web to discover pages for its index, then serving results from information its systems have indexed. Results and available features can also vary by query, language, location, and device. Google Search Central.

Horizontal and vertical search compared

Aspect Horizontal search Vertical search
Scope Broad coverage across web topics and categories. Limited to a particular category or format.
Examples General web search results spanning subjects. Images, maps, news, travel, flights, jobs, or real estate.
Best fit Exploring a broad question or finding information across subjects. Finding a particular kind of information or completing a focused task.
How it may work May crawl, index, and rank web pages across broad subject areas. Can also crawl, index, and rank information, but within its niche; some services add actions such as booking or contacting a seller.

The category examples and distinction between general and specialized coverage are described by the European Commission, the US House Judiciary Committee, and the European Union Intellectual Property Office. European Commission, 2016; US House Judiciary Committee, 2020; EUIPO, 2024.

Examples of vertical search

Search by format or information type

  • Image search: focuses on pictures and related visual results.
  • Maps search: focuses on geographic and place information.
  • News search: focuses on news content.

Search by subject or task

  • Travel and flight search: focuses on trips, routes, or flights; some travel services also let users book.
  • Job search: focuses on job listings.
  • Real-estate search: focuses on property listings; some services can connect users with sellers or dealers.

These are examples of vertical categories, not a rule that every service in a category offers the same features. A service’s boundaries can also shift as it adds specialized search features. EUIPO, 2024.

Is a horizontal search engine different in how it searches?

Not necessarily. “Horizontal” identifies broad scope; “vertical” identifies a narrower subject or format. Both types can use crawling, indexing, and ranking. The distinction is what information they aim to cover and how tightly their results are tailored to a particular task. Some vertical services go beyond finding information by enabling an action such as booking a holiday package or contacting a seller. EUIPO, 2024.

When should you use each type?

  • Use horizontal search when the subject is broad, you are exploring, or you need results from different kinds of web pages.
  • Use vertical search when you know the category you need—such as jobs, flights, maps, or images—or when a specialist service offers task-specific filters or actions.

These approaches can complement each other: a broad search can help you discover sources, while a focused service can make it easier to search within a specific category.
