You can make room on a Samsung Galaxy without deleting cherished photos: first find what is using storage, then selectively move suitable files to a microSD card or compatible external drive, or clear an app’s cache. Menu names and hardware vary by model, software version, and country, so check your exact phone before following a transfer path.
Find what is taking up space before changing anything
Open Settings > Device care or Settings > Battery and device care > Storage. Review the storage categories and identify specific files or apps that you no longer need on the phone. If the labels differ, search for “Storage” or “Device care” in Settings. Samsung notes that settings and screens can vary by model and country in its Canadian Device care guide.

Look through Downloads, large videos, audio, and documents one item at a time. Device care may also surface unused apps or other cleanup suggestions; treat these as prompts to review, not an instruction to remove everything. Samsung’s Canadian guide identifies unused apps as apps not used in the past 30 days, a Samsung support criterion rather than a universal Android rule. No particular amount of space recovered is guaranteed.

Use a microSD card if your exact model has a slot
Galaxy models do not all support microSD. If yours does, Samsung’s documented method is to use the My Files app to select and move or copy files to the card. This is suitable for items such as videos and downloads, but Samsung cautions that this method does not move files to other apps such as Gallery. See Samsung’s microSD instructions and verify your model’s hardware before relying on a card.

Connect external storage where supported
Samsung also documents transferring files to connected external storage through My Files. Check that your phone and connector support the drive or other storage device. Before removing anything from the phone, open the destination and confirm the files are present and accessible. Samsung’s file-management guide covers moving and copying files.
| Option | What to check | What happens to the phone’s file |
|---|---|---|
| microSD card | Your Galaxy model has a card slot; transfers use My Files. | Move removes the internal source after transfer; Copy leaves it on the phone. |
| Connected external storage | Your phone and connector support the device; transfers use My Files. | Move removes the internal source after transfer; Copy leaves it on the phone. |
Files stored on removable or connected storage are available only when that storage is accessible. Copying a file alone does not reclaim its internal storage; reclaiming it requires a successful move or a later, deliberate removal of the phone’s copy.

Clear app cache without confusing it with app data
Samsung provides separate controls for clearing an app’s cache and clearing its data. Cache is temporary app content; clearing it is a narrower option to consider for a specific app. Clear data is a different, more consequential action and should not be treated as a harmless storage cleanup. Check what the individual app may lose or need to set up again before using it. Samsung explains the distinction in its guide to clearing cache and data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Syncing is not the same as removing the local photo
Samsung’s US storage guide mentions Gallery photo sync with OneDrive. Syncing or backing up is not, by itself, proof that the local copy has been removed or that phone storage has been reclaimed. Before changing local files, confirm that the photos you want to keep are safely accessible in the intended destination. Samsung’s storage-space guide discusses Gallery sync.

Trash is a recovery window, not a way to keep photos while freeing space
Samsung says deleted Gallery items remain in Recycle bin for 30 days and can be restored during that period. Emptying the bin permanently deletes those items; it may reclaim space only by permanently removing them. Use Trash for recovery protection, not as storage for photos you want to preserve. See Samsung’s Trash instructions.
