A home automation hub is a device or platform component that connects and coordinates compatible smart-home devices, often bringing their control and automations into one place. The label does not guarantee universal compatibility, a particular wireless radio, or offline operation: check the capabilities of the exact model and the ecosystem you use.

What does a home automation hub do?

A hub acts as a connection point or control center for supported smart-home devices. Depending on the product, it may connect devices using one or more wireless technologies, let you control them from an app, coordinate automations, or provide voice and display controls. Some hub functions are built into speakers, smart displays, routers, and streaming devices rather than a separate box.

Tuya Developer describes a smart-home hub as “typically a connection point in the home for multiple smart home devices.” That is a useful plain-language description, but individual products called hubs can have quite different capabilities.

How is a hub different from a Matter controller, bridge, or Thread border router?

These terms describe different roles, even when one product performs several of them. A hub is a broad product category; the other terms refer to specific functions.

Term What it means
Hub A broad label for a device or platform component that connects or coordinates compatible smart-home devices. Its exact radios and functions depend on the model.
Matter controller A software role for administering Matter devices in a platform. A product marketed as a hub is not automatically a Matter controller.
Bridge A device or function that brings supported non-Matter devices or protocols into a Matter ecosystem. Which devices and functions are exposed depends on the bridge.
Thread border router A network function that connects a Thread network to the home’s IP network. It is not, by itself, the same thing as a Matter controller.

A single device can combine these roles, but do not infer one capability from another. For example, having a Thread border router does not by itself establish that a device can administer Matter products.

Do you need a hub for Matter?

It depends on the Matter device’s network transport and the platform you want to use. Matter devices can use Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. In Google Home, Google says Wi-Fi-only Matter devices can be managed by listed Wi-Fi-capable hub devices; Matter devices that use Thread need a hub that also functions as a Thread border router. Google’s documentation defines a hub in terms of its own supported Nest devices and services, so that wording should not be treated as a universal definition of a hub.

Aqara Smart Hub M100 for Home Automation, Matter Controller, Wi-Fi
  • Multi-Protocol Smart Hub with Matter Bridge – The M100 is a versatile smart hub compatible with Thread devices and Aqara Zigbee (** Not third-party Zigbee devices), supporting up to 20 Aqara Zigbee devices and 20 Thread devices. As a Matter Bridge, it connects Aqara Zigbee products to other smart home ecosystems, compatible with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Home Assistant, etc. Note: Use a 5V⎓0.5A power adapter (not included) and keep the product continuously powered during use.
  • Advanced Matter Bridging for Seamless Smart Home Integration – The M100 enables Aqara’s unique features, such as facial recognition and complex automation, to work across Home Assistant and other Matter ecosystems. Expand your smart home with Aqara or third-party Matter devices (requires a Matter-enabled hub). Currently supports lights, thermostats, plugs, switches, buttons, and various sensors (motion, light, door/window, temperature/humidity), with more devices to be added in the future.
  • Local Automation for Reliable Performance – Supports local execution of automations for Zigbee and Matter devices, ensuring smooth operation even without Wi-Fi or cloud access. Enjoy millisecond-level response times for a more stable and reliable smart home experience. (Some automation, such as cloud push notification, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)
  • Flexible Power & Small Size – Features a universal USB-A port for power and data, allowing connection to power banks, wall outlets, PCs, or routers for a simple and quick setup. The Hub M100's shaft can be adjusted within a 210-degree range, making its placement extremely flexible.
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 for Faster & Security—This product supports a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 wireless network connection, which enables more efficient connections with advanced WPA3 security. Wi-Fi 6 ensures smoother performance even in high-traffic environments, allowing multiple devices to connect without compromising speed or reliability. Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.

Google’s compatible device categories include speakers, displays, Wi-Fi routers, streamers, and select TVs for Wi-Fi-only Matter management, while devices with Thread support are separately identified. The compatible-device list can change; check Google Home’s current Matter setup requirements before choosing hardware. A Thread border router connects Thread devices to the home’s IP network; it does not automatically provide every other hub or Matter-controller function.

How to choose a hub for your devices

Start with the devices you already own and the ones you plan to add. Match their requirements against the exact hub model and the platform you intend to use.

  • [Local Automation for Reliable Performance] Supports local execution of automations for Zigbee and Matter devices, ensuring smooth operation even without Wi-Fi or cloud access. Enjoy millisecond response times for a more stable and reliable smart home experience. (Some automation, such as cloud push notifications, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)
  • Ecosystem and device support: Confirm that the platform supports each device model and the functions you need. A shared brand name does not guarantee compatibility.
  • Radio and protocol support: Check for the required Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or other connection method. The word “hub” alone does not identify which radios are built in.
  • Matter roles: If you plan to use Matter, verify that the product can act as the controller for your platform. If your Matter devices use Thread, verify Thread border-router support as well.
  • Bridging: If you want to keep existing non-Matter devices, check whether the hub can bridge them into your chosen ecosystem and which controls or features remain available.
  • Control and automation: Look for documented app, voice, display, and automation functions. Do not assume automations run locally or that devices remain controllable without internet access unless the manufacturer says so.
  • Setup and remote access: Check whether setup or remote control requires a vendor-specific app, account, or hub, and review the manufacturer’s current instructions.

When is a separate hub unnecessary?

You may not need to buy a standalone hub if a device you already own provides the specific functions your setup requires. A compatible speaker, display, router, or streamer may serve as a platform hub, and some products also include a Thread border router. Confirm the precise model and its supported devices: a built-in hub function for one ecosystem or transport does not imply support for every smart-home product.
