A hard disk drive (HDD) is a non-volatile storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic patterns on rigid, rotating disks called platters. It keeps data when power is off. Unlike a solid-state drive (SSD), which uses flash memory, an HDD relies on spinning platters and moving read/write heads.
What does “hard disk drive” mean?
HDD stands for “hard disk drive.” The “hard” describes the rigid disk medium, distinguishing it historically from the flexible media used in floppy disks. In formal terminology, NIST defines a hard disk as “a rigid magnetic disk that is permanently fixed within a drive unit and used to store data,” while noting that a removable cartridge can also contain magnetic disks. An HDD is non-volatile storage: data recorded on it remains stored when the computer or drive is switched off. Crucial
How does a hard drive work?
An HDD encodes data as magnetic patterns on the surfaces of its platters. A spindle motor turns the platters while an actuator moves the read/write heads to the area needed. To save data, a head changes magnetic patterns; to retrieve it, a head detects those patterns and the drive sends the data to the connected computer. Samsung Semiconductor Western Digital

These operations happen at the storage level; a visible file does not necessarily correspond one-to-one with a physical area or sector on a platter. Deleting a file also does not necessarily erase its magnetic pattern immediately: the drive may mark the space as available and overwrite it when that space is reused. Western Digital
What are the main parts of an HDD?
- Platters: Rigid disks with magnetic surfaces where data is stored.
- Spindle and spindle motor: Hold and rotate the platters.
- Read/write heads: Detect magnetic patterns to read data and change them to write data.
- Actuator assembly: Moves the heads over the required platter area.
- Control electronics: Coordinate the drive’s operation and communication with the host computer.
The number and arrangement of platters and heads depend on the particular drive model. Samsung Semiconductor Crucial

How is an HDD different from an SSD?
| Feature | HDD | SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Storage method | Magnetic patterns on rotating platters | Flash memory |
| Moving storage parts | Spinning platters and moving read/write heads | No spinning platter or mechanically moving read/write heads |
This is the basic technology distinction: a computer’s storage drive may be an HDD or an SSD, and the word “drive” alone does not identify which type it is. The comparison here does not establish that all HDDs or SSDs have a particular speed, price, reliability, or lifespan; those depend on the products and how they are used. Lenovo CORSAIR

No. “External” describes how a drive is connected or used, not its storage technology. An external drive can be an HDD or an SSD. Internal and external HDDs are both forms of hard disk drive; identify the storage type from the product specifications rather than the word “external.” Crucial Western Digital
