The graphics cards do the main computational work; the motherboard, processor, memory, storage, power supply, cooling, and mining software support them. A rig is only hardware: it does not guarantee earnings or work with every cryptocurrency.
What a GPU mining rig does
A mining rig supplies computing power to a supported proof-of-work network. Its GPUs perform the calculations required by the mining software, which connects the computer to the relevant mining process. Depending on the network and setup, a participant may also use a mining pool and a wallet to account for rewards.

The rig itself does not validate transactions on every cryptocurrency network. Mining rules and supported hardware differ by network, and some networks do not use mining at all. For example, Ethereum moved to proof of stake in 2022; Binance Academy’s overview, updated May 21, 2026, describes how that change affected GPU mining: Binance Academy’s mining-rig overview.

| Part | Role | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GPU or graphics card | Performs the mining computations. | Check support for the intended network or algorithm, performance, power draw, card dimensions, and cooling. Historical benchmark figures are not evidence of current profitability. |
| Motherboard | Connects the GPUs and the rest of the computer. | Confirm expansion support and physical layout for the planned number of cards. |
| CPU, RAM, and storage | Run the host operating system and mining software. | Requirements depend on the chosen software and operating system; no single specification applies to every rig. |
| Power supply and cabling | Supply power to the GPUs and other components. | Size for the actual system load, verify ratings and connectors, and follow manufacturers’ instructions. |
| Frame, risers, and cooling | Hold and space cards, and help manage airflow. | Check compatibility of the frame and risers, and provide suitable airflow. These accessories are not universal requirements. |
| Software and network connection | Connect the hardware to a mining workflow. | Requirements vary by network and software. A pool and wallet may also be part of the setup. |
Component fit matters: a multi-GPU build may need a frame and risers, but the correct arrangement depends on the motherboard, cards, and other selected parts. Power, heat, and safety
There is no universal wattage for a GPU mining rig. Whole-system consumption varies with the number and type of GPUs and the other components. Assess the assembled system’s power draw, heat, noise, cooling needs, and local electricity cost rather than relying on a generic estimate. A performance or hashrate figure alone does not establish profitability.
Electrical work also needs care. NVIDIA’s safety guide for the DGX A100 Station warns of shock and fire hazards, emphasizes grounded connections and cables rated for the equipment, and advises consulting a licensed electrician or power company for site modifications. Those instructions apply to that product; follow the safety documentation for each component and the wiring rules where the rig will be used. NVIDIA DGX A100 Station User Guide: Safety

What to compare when evaluating rigs
- Network and algorithm: Confirm that the intended network supports mining with the chosen hardware.
- Measured performance: Compare hashrate only when the algorithm, settings, and test conditions are stated.
- Whole-system power: Consider energy use for the complete rig, not just a graphics card’s rating.
- Compatibility and fit: Check GPU count, motherboard slots, risers, card dimensions, and frame layout.
- Operating conditions: Account for cooling, heat, noise, and the electrical capacity available at the installation site.
- Economics: Any earnings estimate also depends on current network difficulty and rewards, pool fees, uptime, hardware cost, and local electricity price. A hashrate figure by itself is not an earnings estimate.
Mining economics, network rules, component compatibility, and GPU prices can change. A GPU mining rig is best understood as specialized computing hardware; whether a specific build is usable or worthwhile depends on its network, software, components, and operating conditions.
