A secure wall-mounted TV depends on three things working together: a mount that fits the television, fasteners suited to the wall structure, and correct installation of the wall plate and TV. On a typical wood-stud-and-drywall wall, attach the mount to the studs rather than relying on drywall alone. For masonry, plaster, steel studs, or any uncertain structure, use instructions and hardware designed for that wall—or ask a qualified professional.
Check the TV, mount, and wall before drilling
Start by identifying the wall construction and confirming that the mount is compatible with both the TV and that wall. Check the TV’s mounting pattern, the mount’s supported TV weight, and the wall types permitted by the mount’s instructions. A mount’s weight rating is specific to that model; do not assume a rating from one product applies to another.

Consumer Reports describes conventional wood-stud framing as the simplest setting for installation, while plaster, concrete, and brick may require special mounting choices or professional help. Its installation guidance recommends fastening into studs on conventional framed walls. Consumer Reports: How to Mount a TV on the Wall

Consider the TV’s weight and mounting fit alongside the wall type and the mount’s movement. A fixed, tilting, or articulating mount may have different installation requirements. Use the exact mount manual to verify permitted fasteners and wall materials before buying or drilling.

Do not treat drywall as structural support
For a conventional wood-stud wall, the cited consumer guidance recommends placing the mount’s fasteners in the studs, not attaching the mount to drywall alone. A mount designed for masonry or another wall construction may call for a different method; follow that product’s instructions rather than adapting a wood-stud procedure.
How to mount a TV securely on wood studs
- Find and confirm the studs. Use a stud finder to locate both edges of each stud, then mark its center. A nearby outlet or existing fastener can offer a clue to stud location, but confirm the structure before drilling.
- Position and level the wall plate. Choose the TV position, check access to ports and cable connections, and use the mount template or wall plate to mark the holes. Check that the plate is level.
- Drill the specified pilot holes. Use the bit size required by the mount manual. Hole sizes and fasteners vary by product; do not reuse a measurement or bolt instruction from a different mount.
- Secure the plate with the specified fasteners. Use the fasteners intended for the wall and mount, tightening them as instructed. Consumer Reports describes using a socket wrench for lag bolts and checking level while and after securing the plate. See the Consumer Reports installation guide
- Attach and lock the TV as directed. Large televisions are safer to lift with a helper. Follow the mount’s specific procedure to hang the TV and engage any safety locks or retaining hardware; do not assume the screen is secured merely because it is resting on the wall plate.
What changes with masonry, plaster, or steel studs?
Nonstandard walls are not interchangeable with wood studs. Use a mount and fasteners explicitly approved for the wall construction, and follow the product manual for the exact installation. If you cannot establish that the wall can carry the load or are unsure how to install the hardware, contact the manufacturer or a qualified installer.

Concrete and concrete block
Some mounts are designed for solid concrete or concrete block as well as wood studs, but their requirements are model-specific. For example, the ECHOGEAR EGLF3 manual lists wood studs, solid concrete, and concrete block as permitted wall types and says not to install into drywall alone. It also specifies that the wall must support five times the combined TV and mount weight, and gives a maximum TV weight of 110 lb (49.8 kg) for that mount. These are EGLF3 instructions, not universal mounting standards. ECHOGEAR EGLF3 manual
Steel studs
Steel-stud installations require particular care and compatible hardware. The ECHOGEAR EGHWSS kit manual restricts its use to steel-stud walls with tilting or low-profile fixed TV mounts; it also specifies conditions for stud construction, drywall thickness, centered installation, and screw spacing. The manual says to contact the manufacturer or a qualified contractor if the instructions are unclear or safety is in doubt. This specialized kit is not a general endorsement of attaching any TV mount to steel studs. ECHOGEAR EGHWSS manual

Plaster and other uncertain walls
Plaster may conceal different supporting materials, and the appropriate attachment depends on what is behind the surface. Consumer Reports notes that plaster, concrete, and brick can require special mounting choices or professional installation. Do not rely on a generic anchor choice when the mount or wall instructions do not approve it. Consumer Reports: How to Choose a TV Wall Mount
How to tell whether the installation is secure
- The mount is compatible with the TV’s mounting pattern and weight, and the wall type is allowed by the mount manual.
- On a conventional stud wall, the specified fasteners enter the studs rather than relying on drywall alone.
- The wall plate is level, firmly attached with the correct fasteners, and shows no visible movement or separation from the wall.
- The TV is seated and any retaining locks or safety hardware are engaged according to the mount instructions.
These checks do not replace the manufacturer’s installation and maintenance instructions. The available guidance does not establish a universal inspection interval; follow the mount maker’s directions and reassess the installation if you notice movement, loose hardware, or a change in the wall.
