WAAS is one example: it is a regional satellite-based augmentation system. The term describes a broad category, not one device or a guarantee of a particular accuracy.
What GPS augmentation means
GPS.gov defines augmentation as a system that aids GPS with improvements to positioning, navigation and timing that GPS does not inherently provide. In practice, augmentation can supply correction data, integrity information or other services that help a compatible receiver produce a more useful navigation solution.

Integrity is different from accuracy: it concerns confidence that a navigation solution is usable, including timely alerts when it is not. This distinction matters in safety-critical uses, where a position that looks precise is not enough unless the system can also indicate when it should not be trusted.
GPS.gov’s Augmentation Systems page also lists precise-positioning data and services such as NOAA CORS/OPUS, NASA/JPL GDGPS and IGS, alongside satellite-based services. They support different users and workflows; augmentation is not limited to one broadcast technology.

How an augmentation system works
A common approach uses reference stations at known, surveyed locations. The stations receive GPS signals and compare their measurements with their known positions. A system can use those differences to estimate relevant errors and send correction or integrity information to users. A compatible receiver then applies the information to its own positioning solution.
In the FAA’s explanation of WAAS, Wide Area Reference Stations feed WAAS Master Stations. The master stations generate a user message every second, and those messages help receivers remove errors and improve accuracy and integrity. That is an operational detail of the FAA’s WAAS description, not a universal message rate for every augmentation service.

How the main types differ
| Type | How information reaches users | Typical coverage and use |
|---|---|---|
| SBAS (satellite-based augmentation system) | Regional augmentation information is broadcast through satellites. | Regional service. FAA-operated WAAS supports aircraft navigation across North America and is also widely available in receivers used by other positioning, navigation and timing communities. WAAS is interoperable with regional SBAS services including Japan’s MSAS, Europe’s EGNOS and India’s GAGAN. |
| GBAS (ground-based augmentation system) | A local ground installation broadcasts corrections and integrity information. | Typically airport-local. The FAA describes GBAS as improving GPS position accuracy and providing integrity for aircraft in the vicinity of an airport. |
| Differential and network services | Reference data, corrections or related positioning products are supplied through different service workflows. | Services such as CORS/OPUS, GDGPS and IGS serve differing positioning needs, including precise positioning and research; they are not all ordinary turn-by-turn navigation services. |
Coverage and delivery method are practical differences, not merely technical labels. WAAS is regional and satellite-broadcast; GBAS is localized around an airport. Neither label by itself establishes that a receiver can use the service everywhere or that an operation is approved.

What improvement to expect—and what not to assume
Augmentation can improve accuracy, integrity or availability, but it does not guarantee one fixed accuracy everywhere or make GPS infallible. GPS.gov says user accuracy depends on satellite geometry, signal blockage, atmospheric conditions and receiver design and quality, as well as signal performance. Using two GPS frequencies can correct atmospheric signal distortion, but the result still depends on the service, receiver, environment and operating conditions. See GPS.gov’s GPS accuracy explanation.

- Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
The FAA identifies accuracy and integrity as WAAS benefits, and its Aeronautical Information Manual also identifies availability as a performance goal. These are service objectives, not a promise that every receiver, location or operating condition will produce the same result.

A receiver needs compatible hardware or software to use a particular augmentation service. A product described as WAAS-capable may be suitable for receiving WAAS signals in some contexts, but that phrase does not establish approval for a particular aviation operation. Verify the exact receiver’s supported signals and intended-use approvals; aviation requirements are distinct from general consumer positioning. GPS.gov explains augmentation availability through receiver equipment on its augmentation systems page.

- Navigate with Garmin Caliber GPS data on the mobile device of your choice.
- Glow 2 can receive position information from both the GPS and GLONASS satellite constellations, allowing it to connect to up to 24 more satellites than devices that rely on GPS alone.
- This allows Glo 2 to lock on to satellites approximately 20% faster and remain connected even at high speed.
- Coverage: Check whether the service covers the location and route where you will use it.
- Delivery: Determine whether data is satellite-broadcast, locally broadcast, or provided through a network or other workflow, and whether connectivity or line of sight is needed.
- Performance: Look for accuracy and integrity information specified for your actual use, rather than assuming all augmentation provides the same result.
- Compatibility: Confirm the receiver and software support the service’s signals or data format, and check for subscription or data requirements.
- Approval: For regulated or safety-critical use, verify approval for the exact operation; a general claim of augmentation support is not enough.
Current status: WAAS and discontinued NDGPS
GPS.gov describes WAAS as an FAA-operated regional SBAS. By contrast, U.S. NDGPS service was discontinued on June 30, 2020, according to GPS.gov; it should not be described as a currently operating U.S. service. GPS.gov says DGPS was no longer considered necessary for close harbor approach after GPS III rollout and the permanent end of Selective Availability.
The GPS WAAS Performance Standard describes additional accuracy, availability, continuity and integrity for supported flight phases at qualified airports within WAAS coverage. That standard is dated 2008, so it is not a live performance report. For operational planning, consult current FAA performance information rather than treating the older standard as a current service measurement. The standard is available at GPS.gov’s WAAS Performance Standard.
