What Is a Google Knowledge Panel and How Do You Claim It?

A Google Knowledge Panel is an information box that Search may show about a person, place, organization, or other entity. If you are the subject or an official representative, you can claim a panel when Google offers the claim option and verify your connection through an official account. A claim is not available for every panel, and it does not guarantee that Google will make requested edits.

What a Google Knowledge Panel is

A Knowledge Panel is generated by Google to summarize what it understands about an entity. Google says panels draw on its Knowledge Graph and information available across the web; some topics may also use data partners. Google’s systems show a panel when they find enough information about an entity. The panel and its facts can update automatically, and Google also considers suggestions from verified entities and general user feedback. A panel is therefore not a profile that an individual creates or controls outright. Claiming it confirms your relationship to the subject and lets you suggest edits to information on the panel; Google still decides what to display.

Who can claim a panel

The subject of the panel or someone officially authorized to represent that person or entity should use the claim process. Do not claim a panel simply because you manage a related website, work in the same field, or want to change information about someone else.

You need a Google Account and access to an official site or profile associated with the entity. Google’s verification examples include YouTube, Search Console, Twitter, and Facebook. The accounts available to verify can depend on the entity and what Google recognizes as official. Google: Get verified on Google

How to claim and verify a Knowledge Panel

  1. Sign in to a Google Account. If you do not have one, create an account before starting.
  2. Find the panel in Google Search. Search for yourself or the entity you officially represent, then locate the relevant Knowledge Panel.
  3. Choose the claim option. Select Claim this knowledge panel at the bottom of the panel or, where shown, in its About section. On mobile, open the panel menu and look for the claim action.
  4. Review the panel information. Check that you have found the correct entity’s panel before proceeding.
  5. Verify through an official account. Sign in to one of the official sites or profiles Google lists for the entity and follow the prompts. If Google cannot identify an associated site, it may ask for additional information to verify you.

The exact interface can vary. Google says the claim control is not available for every panel; if you cannot find it, check again later rather than assuming the panel is permanently unclaimable. Google: Get verified on Google

If the claim option is missing or verification fails

No claim option appears

Google’s stated alternative is to send feedback about the panel. For an incorrect fact, select Feedback below the panel, flag the relevant information, explain what is wrong and what it should say, and include links that support the correction. Google says it sends a confirmation email after a submission. Feedback is a suggestion, not a guarantee that Google will change the panel.

Someone else already manages the panel

First check with colleagues and other likely official representatives to see whether they manage it. If no one can identify the manager, Google’s account-recovery process may help. Google says it may ask permission to share your email address with current managers and allow three business days for a response; if no one responds, the panel becomes claimable again. This is the timing Google describes for that process, not a guarantee that every case will resolve on that schedule.

Your account is not recognized as associated

Try the Google Account linked to the official site or profile you are using to verify. For a website, Google advises adding the official site to Search Console and adding an owner. For a YouTube channel, only its current owner can transfer channel ownership. These steps address account association; they do not make a panel claimable if Google has not provided a claim option.

Knowledge Panel or Business Profile?

These are separate Google products with different purposes. A Knowledge Panel is generated for an entity Google recognizes in its Knowledge Graph. A Business Profile is for a business that serves customers at a particular location or within a designated service area, and it is managed for visibility on Google Search and Maps. If your goal is to manage a local business listing, use Google’s Business Profile tools to claim or create that profile rather than treating it as a Knowledge Panel claim.

Is a Search Profile the same thing?

No. Google’s Search Profiles are a separate feature for eligible creators, publishers, or brands. Google documents distinct processes for claiming an existing Search Profile and creating a new one; their eligibility requirements and availability are not the Knowledge Panel verification rules. Because Google’s profile requirements can change and may depend on location or linked accounts, check the applicable current Help page if the Search interface is offering a Search Profile rather than a Knowledge Panel claim: Claim an existing Search profile · Create a new Search profile
