Wix is usually the better fit if you want a guided website builder with hosting and core tools in one service. Self-hosted WordPress is usually better if you want to choose your host and control a more flexible technical setup. There is a third option: WordPress.com, a managed hosting service that uses WordPress software. It is not the same product as self-hosted WordPress from WordPress.org, and the distinction matters for cost, upkeep and flexibility.

The right choice depends on how much control you want—and how much setup and maintenance you are willing to take on.

First, what do you mean by WordPress?

“WordPress” can refer to two different ways to build a site. Comparing Wix with an unspecified WordPress product can lead to misleading conclusions, especially about hosting and maintenance.

Option What it is Who handles hosting and upkeep?
Wix A hosted, all-in-one website platform. Wix describes hosting, SSL, templates, SEO tools and business features as part of its offering. These are vendor descriptions, not independent performance findings. Wix’s comparison page Wix provides the hosted environment; check the current plan for the exact features and support available to you.
WordPress.org (self-hosted WordPress) Open-source content-management software that you install with a third-party host. WordPress.com’s guide to WordPress.com and WordPress.org You choose and pay the host and manage the installation, themes, plugins and ongoing site maintenance.
WordPress.com A commercial managed-hosting service owned by Automattic that uses WordPress software. WordPress.com’s guide to WordPress.com and WordPress.org WordPress.com describes hosting, security, updates and backups as included, with features and support varying by plan.

WordPress.com says customers own their content and can move it. That does not make WordPress.com identical to a self-hosted WordPress.org site: hosting arrangements, responsibilities and plan features differ.

How the main trade-offs compare

What matters Wix Self-hosted WordPress WordPress.com
Setup Guided builder and hosted environment; less separate server setup. Wix Choose a host, install WordPress and configure the site; more decisions and responsibility. WordPress.com’s guide Managed WordPress hosting rather than operating your own installation; plan details vary. WordPress.com’s guide
Control and extensions Integrated workflow within Wix’s platform and its available tools. More choice over hosting and technical environment, including certain code and PHP customizations; you select and manage themes and plugins. WordPress.com’s guide WordPress software in a managed service; available features depend on the plan. WordPress.com’s guide
Maintenance Hosted service reduces the need to arrange a separate server. You are responsible for the host, installation, themes, plugins and maintenance. WordPress.com describes updates, security and backups as part of managed hosting; check the plan for specifics.
Support Wix describes a help center and 24/7 phone support on its comparison page; confirm current availability for your plan and geography. Wix Support depends partly on the third-party host and services you choose. WordPress.com’s guide Support depends on the plan. WordPress.com’s guide
Portability Wix documents importing WordPress blog posts, but WordPress.com’s comparison says Wix does not offer a full-site export of design or structure. Wix WordPress.com’s Wix comparison Portability depends on how the site is built and what the host or extensions provide. WordPress.com describes content export and migration options; confirm current limitations for the plan and destination. WordPress.com’s Wix comparison
Cost Compare the applicable plan, billing period and renewal terms. Include hosting and any paid themes, plugins, services or maintenance you actually need. Compare the exact plan, billing duration, included features and renewal terms.

When Wix is the better choice

You want a guided, hosted workflow

Wix is a natural fit if you prefer to build within one hosted service rather than select and maintain a separate server setup. Wix lists templates, hosting, SSL, SEO tools and business-management features on its comparison page. Those descriptions establish what Wix says it offers, not how it performs against another platform in an independent test. Wix’s comparison page

You value having one vendor for help

Wix describes a help center and 24/7 phone support on its comparison page. Support channels and eligibility can change, so verify what applies to your plan and location before choosing. Wix’s comparison page

You are comfortable building within Wix

A hosted, integrated workflow can mean fewer separate pieces to arrange. The trade-off is that moving a site later may involve rebuilding parts of it: importing blog posts is not the same as transferring the complete design, structure and behavior.

When self-hosted WordPress is the better choice

You want to choose your host and technical setup

With WordPress.org software, you select a third-party host and manage the installation, themes and plugins. WordPress.com’s guide describes this approach as allowing more technical freedom, including certain code and PHP customizations, while leaving hosting and site upkeep to you. Hosts differ in features and fees. WordPress.com’s guide

You want to select and manage extensions independently

Self-hosted WordPress lets you choose your hosting and site extensions rather than relying on one platform’s integrated environment. That control comes with the work of evaluating compatibility, maintenance needs, support and costs for the specific host, themes and plugins you use.

When WordPress.com is the better choice

Choose WordPress.com if you want WordPress software on a managed hosting service rather than an installation you operate yourself. WordPress.com describes hosting, security, updates, backups and support as part of its service, with details dependent on plan. Its Wix comparison also describes content export, theme switching and migration options; verify that the features you need are available on the plan you are considering. How to compare the total cost fairly

There is no sound universal claim that Wix or WordPress costs less without matching the product, plan, features and billing terms. Wix says premium payment can be monthly or yearly. WordPress.com’s comparison page displays multiple billing durations and plan prices, which may change. No single price should be treated as a like-for-like comparison unless its region, currency, billing term and renewal conditions match the alternative. Wix WordPress.com’s Wix comparison

  • Compare the first-term cost with the renewal cost, not just an introductory offer.
  • For self-hosted WordPress, add the host and only the paid themes, plugins, services or maintenance you expect to need.
  • Check what each plan includes for hosting, security, backups, support, storage, traffic and ecommerce.
  • Use the same billing period, currency and feature requirements for each option.

Third-party hosting providers vary in services and fees, and low introductory hosting prices may apply only to an initial billing cycle. WordPress.com’s guide

SEO tools do not prove which site will rank higher

Wix lists features such as sitemap and meta-tag management. WordPress.com advertises built-in SEO tools and access to plugins. These are feature claims, not evidence that either platform inherently ranks better. The sources cited here do not establish an independent controlled comparison of search rankings or page speed. What moves when you migrate?

Wix says it offers a tool to import published WordPress blog posts. WordPress.com describes migration to and from WordPress, and its Wix comparison says Wix does not offer a full-site export equivalent for design and structure. These vendor-published descriptions distinguish content transfer from a complete site move: importing posts or exporting content does not automatically recreate templates, functionality, plugins or integrations. Wix WordPress.com’s guide WordPress.com’s Wix comparison

Before switching platforms, make an inventory so you can plan what needs to be transferred, rebuilt or redirected:

  • Pages, posts and media
  • Page URLs and any redirects needed to preserve old addresses
  • Forms and their data or integrations
  • Ecommerce products, orders and related data
  • Custom functionality, plugins and third-party integrations

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Wix if you want a guided builder and a single hosted environment, and are comfortable working within its platform.
  • Choose self-hosted WordPress if selecting your host and managing a more extensible technical stack matter more than minimizing setup and maintenance work.
  • Choose WordPress.com if you want managed WordPress hosting and prefer a service provider to handle hosting-related tasks, with features and support determined by plan.
