What Is a Gigabyte (GB or GByte)? Decimal vs. Binary Units Explained

A gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Learn why GB differs from GiB, how binary prefixes arose, and how to compare capacities, bits and transfer rates accurately.

A gigabyte (GB, also written GByte) is a decimal data unit equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes (109 bytes). A different unit, the gibibyte (GiB), equals 1,073,741,824 bytes (230). Use GB and GiB deliberately: they are not interchangeable when an exact capacity matters.

Gigabyte definition

Under the International System of Units (SI), giga means 109. Therefore:

  • 1 GB = 109 bytes = 1,000,000,000 bytes
  • 1 byte = 8 bits; an uppercase B denotes bytes, while a lowercase b conventionally denotes bits

“GB” is the standard compact symbol. “GByte” is an alternate written form used in some explanatory material, including the Techopedia definition that supplies this topic’s wording.

GB versus GiB

Unit Prefix system Exact byte count Typical notation
Gigabyte Decimal SI 1,000,000,000 bytes (109) GB or GByte
Gibibyte Binary IEC 1,073,741,824 bytes (230) GiB

The extra “i” in GiB signals the binary prefix gibi. NIST’s SI guidance says SI prefixes refer strictly to powers of 10, while its binary-prefix guidance identifies 1 GB as 109 bytes and 1 GiB as 230 bytes.

Rapoo K50 Wireless Number Pad, 2.4G Numeric Keypad for Laptop, Speed Data Entry, 22-Key Numpad with Calculator, Email and Function Keys for Windows PC/Laptop/Desktop/Notebook, USB-A, Battery Powered
  • Wireless Number Pad for Laptop: Speed up number input and calculation compared to using the number row above the letters.
  • User-friendly Ergonomics: Place this numeric keypad on the left/right side, or in front of your laptop/TKL keyboard, and input numbers in a comfortable way. Reduce shoulder and hand strain while improving overall efficiency, especially for left-handed users where there are less keyboard options specially designed for them.
  • Lower Latency & Greater Stability: Featuring 2.4G wireless connectivity with 1000Hz polling rate, this numpad responds 8x faster than Bluetooth ones (125Hz polling rate), making zero input lag, dropouts or missing numbers - ideal for professional data entry or accounting at workplaces with lots of wireless signal interference.
  • Built-in Calculator & Email for Windows: Open your computer calculator or Microsoft Outlook with one-button clicks, streamlining calculations and emails without switching between applications. Note: the Calculator and Email function keys may not work on other OS.
  • Plug and Play: No drivers required, just simply plug the receiver into a USB-A port on your computer and the keypad is ready to use. The built-in USB storage compartment makes it highly portable for use with laptops. For devices that only have type-c ports, you’ll need a USB hub or a USB-A to USB-C adapter (excluded in the box).

Why the two conventions exist

Early computing systems commonly used kilo to mean 1,024 because 210 is close to 1,000 and computer memory is organized in powers of two. As storage, telecommunications and consumer technology developed, that shorthand was used differently by different fields. The result was an ambiguous use of terms such as kilobyte, megabyte and gigabyte.

The IEC approved a separate binary-prefix series in December 1998. The modern precise convention is to reserve GB for 109 bytes and GiB for 230 bytes, while recognizing that older documents and context-specific software may use the words differently.

How to compare a capacity correctly

When two specifications appear to disagree, check each of these details before comparing the numbers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Count the bytes. Convert both values to an actual byte total when possible.
  2. Identify the prefix. Determine whether the value is decimal GB or binary GiB (or another unit such as MB or MiB).
  3. Check bytes versus bits. A value in gigabits (Gb) is eight times the corresponding number of gigabytes only when the same decimal or binary basis is used.
  4. Check for a time basis. “GB” describes an amount of data; “GB/s” describes a transfer rate per second. They answer different questions.

For a decimal-to-binary conversion, divide the byte count by 1,073,741,824 to obtain GiB. For example, a stated 1,000,000,000-byte quantity is about 0.931 GiB, not 1 GiB.

Where gigabytes are used

Storage capacity

Solid-state drives, hard disks, memory cards and downloaded files may be described with byte quantities. A specification is meaningful only when its decimal or binary convention is clear. A manufacturer’s label and an operating system’s display can follow different conventions, so consult the documentation for the particular device or software rather than assuming a universal rule.

Memory and other computer specifications

RAM and other memory measurements are often discussed with binary-sized blocks, but the label shown to users depends on the platform and its documentation. Do not infer a device’s reporting convention solely from the word “gigabyte.”

  • The finger slot cut in each divider makers removing the ink pads easy and the dividers can be taken out for storing larger accessories
  • Material: Made of 5mm thick PVC foam board, durable and easy to clean. Simple installation is required according to the assembly instructions

Data transfer

Network and storage performance may be stated in gigabits per second (Gb/s), gigabytes per second (GB/s), or another rate. The uppercase/lowercase letters and the “per second” suffix both matter; a rate is not the same thing as a capacity.

Writing the units unambiguously

  • Define the unit on first use: “1 GB (109 bytes).”
  • Use GiB for 230 bytes instead of calling it GB in precise technical writing.
  • Keep B for bytes and b for bits.
  • Include “per second” for rates, such as GB/s or Gb/s.
  • When citing a product or application display, identify its region, edition or version and check its current documentation.

Key takeaway

In standards-based usage, a gigabyte is exactly one billion bytes. A gibibyte is the larger binary unit of 1,073,741,824 bytes. Stating the symbol and byte count removes the ambiguity that older computing terminology created.
