A flat-panel display is a thin, low-profile screen that forms images using electronically controlled picture elements. Those elements either control light from a separate source or emit light themselves. The term describes a broad class of display technologies—not just one kind of screen.
What makes a display “flat panel”?
The name refers mainly to the screen’s thin form factor. Unlike a conventional cathode-ray tube (CRT), a flat-panel display does not need a deep vacuum envelope with an electron gun behind the screen. Its image-forming elements are arranged across a two-dimensional panel.

A computer monitor is one familiar example, but “flat-panel display” describes the display inside a device, not the whole device. Monitors, televisions, phones and instruments can all use flat-panel screens.
How do flat-panel displays form images?
Flat panels use different methods to create the light you see. A useful first distinction is whether the panel modulates light from a separate source or emits light at its pixels.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
LCD: pixels control a separate light source
A liquid-crystal display (LCD) uses liquid-crystal material to control how much light passes through each pixel. A conventional LCD needs a separate illumination source, called a backlight, to make the image visible.
OLED: pixels emit their own light
An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display produces light at electrically driven pixels. Because its pixels emit light rather than modulating a separate backlight, OLED is an emissive display technology. Some OLED implementations can use flexible substrates, but that does not mean every OLED screen is flexible.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
Plasma: an emissive technology
Plasma displays are another emissive type. They use gas discharge and phosphors to produce light. Plasma is useful as an example of how flat panels can work, though LCD and OLED are the technologies identified as major current monitor technologies in the sources cited below.

Is an LED display the same as an LCD?
In many television product descriptions, “LED TV” means an LCD screen illuminated by LEDs. In that usage, the LEDs provide the backlight; the LCD pixels still control the light that passes through them. Calling it an LED-backlit LCD makes the distinction clear. The phrase “LED display” can be used differently across products, so the label alone does not always identify the image-forming mechanism.

- ALL-EXPANSIVE VIEW: The three-sided borderless display brings a clean and modern aesthetic to any working environment; In a multi-monitor setup, the displays line up seamlessly for a virtually gapless view without distractions
- SYNCHRONIZED ACTION: AMD FreeSync keeps your monitor and graphics card refresh rate in sync to reduce image tearing; Watch movies and play games without any interruptions; Even fast scenes look seamless and smooth.
- SEAMLESS, SMOOTH VISUALS: The 75Hz refresh rate ensures every frame on screen moves smoothly for fluid scenes without lag; Whether finalizing a work presentation, watching a video or playing a game, content is projected without any ghosting effect
- MORE GAMING POWER: Optimized game settings instantly give you the edge; View games with vivid color and greater image contrast to spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill your screen with every detail in view
- SUPERIOR EYE CARE: Advanced eye comfort technology reduces eye strain for less strenuous extended computing; Flicker Free technology continuously removes tiring and irritating screen flicker, while Eye Saver Mode minimizes emitted blue light
How does a flat-panel display differ from a CRT?
| Feature | Flat-panel display | Conventional CRT |
|---|---|---|
| Physical design | Thin panel with image elements arranged across a two-dimensional surface. | Deep vacuum envelope behind the screen. |
| Image formation | Varies by technology: the panel modulates a light source or emits light. | An electron gun in the vacuum envelope produces the image on the screen. |
| What the term identifies | A broad display category that includes technologies such as LCD and OLED. | A specific display architecture. |
“Flat” is a useful contrast with the depth of a CRT, not a promise that every panel is perfectly flat. The key difference is the display’s low-profile panel architecture and the way it generates or controls light.

- It tells you: the screen uses a thin panel form rather than a conventional CRT architecture.
- It does not tell you: whether the display is LCD, OLED, plasma or another technology.
- It does not describe: a monitor’s resolution, refresh rate, color performance or response time. Those are separate specifications, and the display technology alone does not establish them.
