Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo fit a simulation with fewer experiments, first decide what the experiments must accomplish, then choose test points that answer that question efficiently. Screen for influential inputs, use a suitable design or metamodel to guide the next runs, and reserve independent data to test predictive accuracy. There is no universal experiment-count or runtime saving: the result depends on the model, observations, and goal.
What does “fit the simulation” mean?
“Fit” can mean estimating model parameters from measured data, approximating the model’s input-output behavior, or improving predictive accuracy. These are related but different tasks. The methods below treat the question generally; the best design depends on the intended use and the system being modeled.

- Calibration: use observations to set uncertain model parameters.
- Prediction: estimate outputs for inputs or conditions of interest.
- Sensitivity analysis: learn which inputs materially affect outputs.
- Optimization: find input settings that improve a defined outcome.
- Validation: assess predictive accuracy against data not used to tune the model.
Simulation-experiment design should serve the stated objective rather than maximize the number of runs. J.P.C. Kleijnen’s 2017 tutorial discusses design and analysis choices in relation to simulation goals.

1. Define the decision and the evidence needed
Specify the output you need to predict or improve, the input range that matters, and how much uncertainty is acceptable. A design for finding influential factors is not automatically a good design for calibration or validation. Also identify whether the expensive resource is a physical test, a simulation run, or both.

2. Screen inputs before studying them in depth
If a model has many candidate inputs, begin by identifying which ones plausibly affect the output. Screening can reduce the factor set before a more detailed experiment. The Tilburg University record on experimental design describes screening followed by methods for approximating input-output behavior. A factor that appears unimportant in the tested range may matter elsewhere, so keep the range and assumptions explicit.
3. Select test points with a design, not by convenience alone
Once the important factors and ranges are clearer, choose test points to answer the target question. Fractional factorial designs can investigate factors efficiently; optimal designs select points for a specified modeling objective; and response-surface methods can support optimization. Designs that account for interactions may be important when combined input effects are plausible. The appropriate choice depends on the inputs, observation noise, and analysis objective, rather than on a universally best design.

Kleijnen’s discussion-paper record covers classical and optimal designs, response-surface methods, and variance-reduction techniques. Techniques such as common pseudorandom numbers or control variates apply to simulation settings with suitable stochastic structure; they are not blanket recommendations for physical experiments.
4. Use a metamodel when it makes the next decision cheaper
A metamodel approximates the simulation’s input-output relationship. Low-order polynomial regression and Kriging, also called Gaussian-process modeling, are examples discussed in the Kleijnen tutorial. It is an approximation of the simulation, not the physical system itself. Its usefulness depends on whether it predicts adequately in the region and for the purpose that matter. Account for its uncertainty and check its predictions rather than treating the approximation as ground truth.

5. For expensive calibration, consider choosing runs sequentially
When each simulation run is costly, it can be more efficient to update an emulator as results arrive and select the next parameter setting based on current uncertainty and the calibration objective. A 2024 article abstract by Sürer, Plumlee, and Wild describes sequential Bayesian experimental design that explores uncertain posterior regions while also sampling high-posterior-density regions. The abstract does not establish a universal number of runs saved, and the method is specifically discussed for calibration of expensive simulation models. Read the article abstract.
Keep calibration separate from validation
Calibration uses data to set parameters. Validation experiments instead assess how accurately the model and its computer implementation predict a characterized physical process. If the same observations are used both to tune the model and to claim predictive success, the assessment is not independent evidence of performance. A Cambridge University Press chapter describes validation experiments as designed, executed, and analyzed to assess predictive accuracy for a well-characterized process.

Plan separate validation conditions or data where feasible, especially in the operating region where predictions will inform decisions. A good fit to calibration observations alone does not establish accuracy outside those observations.

- Record the range and settings of each input, along with the measured output and relevant conditions.
- Distinguish variation in observations from uncertainty in model parameters and approximation error.
- Check whether interactions or untested regions could change the conclusion.
- Use a benchmark or independent validation data when available; do not infer predictive reliability from calibration fit alone.
How to choose among approaches
Compare methods against the job the experiment must do. More elaborate designs or emulators are not automatically better if the data are noisy, the factor ranges are poorly characterized, or the model is inexpensive to run.
| Approach | Best suited to | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Factor screening | Reducing a large set of candidate inputs before detailed study | Conclusions depend on the tested ranges and assumptions about effects. |
| Classical or optimal designs | Structured investigation of factors, interactions, or a specified model objective | Choose the design for the analysis goal, not convenience alone. |
| Response surfaces or other metamodels | Approximating simulation behavior to support prediction or optimization | Check predictive adequacy and uncertainty in the region of use. |
| Sequential Bayesian design | Calibration when simulation runs are expensive and an emulator can guide later settings | The cited 2024 abstract describes a method, not a universal savings guarantee. |
| Independent validation experiments | Assessing predictive accuracy against a characterized physical process | Keep validation evidence distinct from data used to calibrate. |
For example, MathWorks’ R2026b Model-Based Calibration Toolbox documentation describes a workflow involving test-point design, physical or simulated data collection, space-filling designs, Gaussian-process response models, and a convex-hull boundary. This is an example of one software workflow, not evidence that its approach is optimal for every project.
What you can—and cannot—expect from “speeding up”
These methods offer ways to allocate experiments and simulation runs more deliberately, but the cited sources do not establish one reduction in test count, runtime, or cost that applies across applications. To make a quantitative claim for a particular project, compare against a defined baseline and report the application, method, number and type of runs, and the quality of the resulting calibration or predictions.
