A dynamic-link library (DLL) is a Windows library module containing code and data that programs can load and use. With dynamic linking, a program can use functions in a separate DLL when it starts or load the DLL later while running.
What a DLL does
A DLL keeps reusable code and data in a module separate from the programs that use it. Multiple programs can use the same library rather than each having the library’s function code copied into its executable, as happens with static linking. Microsoft describes DLLs as supporting modularity and code reuse in Windows.

DLL functions run in the calling program’s process and thread context: they use that process’s address space and the calling thread’s stack. A DLL is not necessarily a separate process. The Windows term is “DLL”; “shared library” is a broad analogy, not a claim that other operating systems use the same file format.
How Windows links a DLL
Windows applications commonly use one of two approaches. The choice affects when the module is loaded and how the application handles a missing DLL.

| Approach | When the DLL is selected | Build-time setup and calls | If the DLL is unavailable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Load-time dynamic linking | Windows locates and loads the required DLL as the application starts. | The developer generally supplies an import library at build time; the application can call imported functions much like ordinary functions. | If a required DLL cannot be found, the application may fail to start. |
| Run-time dynamic linking | The application chooses when to load the DLL while it is running. | The application calls LoadLibrary or LoadLibraryEx, then uses GetProcAddress to obtain an exported function’s address and call through it. An import library is not required for this explicit loading method. |
The application can check whether loading succeeded and choose a fallback or report an error. Microsoft Learn notes that run-time dynamic linking can allow a process to continue if a DLL is unavailable. |
What happens during load-time linking
The executable or module contains import information. When Windows loads the application, it locates the required DLLs, maps them into the process’s virtual address space, calls each DLL’s entry point, and resolves the imported function addresses. If the application no longer needs a DLL loaded at run time, it can call FreeLibrary to release its reference; Windows tracks DLL references per process.
What happens during run-time linking
- Call
LoadLibraryorLoadLibraryExto request the DLL, and check whether the call succeeded. - Call
GetProcAddressto retrieve the address of an exported function. Check that the function is available before calling through its address. - When finished with the loaded module, call
FreeLibraryto release the application’s reference.
How a DLL differs from a static library or a .NET assembly
With a static library, the linker incorporates the needed library code into the calling program’s executable. With a DLL, the program and library remain separate modules, and Windows connects them at load time or when the application explicitly loads the library.

A .NET assembly is not simply another name for a Win32 DLL. Although an assembly may be stored in a file ending in .dll or .exe, its internal structure and role differ from a traditional Windows DLL.
Why DLL search behavior matters
Windows searches for DLLs according to factors such as the application type, loader configuration, and loading flags; there is no single search sequence that applies to every application. For an unpackaged application using the standard search order with safe DLL search mode enabled, the application directory comes before Windows system locations, while the current directory and PATH appear later. Packaged applications and other configurations can behave differently. See Microsoft’s current DLL search-order documentation for the applicable rules.

Search locations also have security implications: if an attacker can control a directory Windows searches, the loader could select a malicious DLL instead of the intended one. Microsoft’s DLL security guidance recommends controlling search locations, including using fully qualified paths where appropriate and documented directory APIs or flags. A missing-DLL message is not a reason to download an arbitrary DLL from an unverified site.

With load-time linking, a missing required DLL can stop an application from starting because Windows needs that dependency during loading. An application using run-time linking can instead check whether the optional module is present and respond with an error or fallback. Microsoft’s explanation of run-time dynamic linking describes this failure-handling difference.

For a Windows Client error, Microsoft’s DLL overview and troubleshooting article explains the role of these files. Which DLL Windows loads depends on the application and loader configuration, so a repair should be based on the specific program and error rather than an arbitrary replacement file.
