A dynamic IP address is assigned automatically by a network, usually through DHCP. It can change when its lease expires or network conditions change, but it may also stay the same for a long time. “Dynamic” describes how the address is assigned—not how often it changes.
How a dynamic IP address is assigned
A device configured as a DHCP client asks a DHCP server for network settings. The server can provide an IP address along with settings such as the default gateway. With dynamic allocation, the address is assigned for a limited period called a lease, or until the client gives it up. Cisco describes DHCP leases in its IOS Release 15M&T configuration guide.

When a lease approaches its end, the client can try to renew it. The server’s policy determines whether renewal succeeds and which address is returned. A reconnect or router restart therefore does not guarantee a new address: a network may renew or issue the same one again. Microsoft’s DHCP troubleshooting guidance covers lease renewal behavior.
As the IETF notes in RFC 4941, section 2.2, an address obtained through DHCP can change over time, but servers often return the same address to the same client. The lease is temporary; that does not mean the address must change whenever the lease is renewed.

Dynamic and static IP addresses compared
| Characteristic | Dynamic IP | Static IP |
|---|---|---|
| Assignment | Obtained automatically from a DHCP server. | Configured to remain fixed; the network or ISP must provide the appropriate settings. |
| Stability | May change, but can remain the same across renewals. | Intended to stay the same. |
| Typical need | Usually sufficient for ordinary browsing. | Can be useful when an internet-facing server or other resource needs a stable numeric address. |
These are differences in assignment and stability, not a guarantee about access. Having a static address by itself does not prove that a device can be reached through the ISP and router. Ask the ISP about reachability requirements before setting up a service that must accept incoming connections. WatchGuard’s overview of static and dynamic addresses discusses stable-address use cases.
Dynamic IP is not the same as public or private IP
“Dynamic” and “static” describe whether an address is assigned automatically and may change. “Public” and “private” describe different network contexts. A home router may receive an ISP-facing address while separately assigning private local addresses to phones, computers, and other devices. Either context can use dynamic assignment. Do not assume the address shown for a device on your home Wi-Fi is the same as the router’s internet-facing address.

Router setup guides treat DHCP, static configuration, and PPPoE as distinct connection choices. MikroTik’s RouterOS first-time configuration guide describes these options and DHCP client setup.

Which router setting should you choose?
For a typical home connection, use the connection type and details supplied by your ISP. If the router asks for a connection type and your ISP has not provided static IP settings or PPPoE credentials, automatic DHCP is commonly used. Linksys outlines this distinction in its connectivity setup overview. Do not guess static IP values: incorrect settings can prevent the router from connecting.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Choose DHCP or Dynamic IP when the ISP says the router should obtain its address automatically.
- Choose Static IP only when the ISP supplies the required fixed-address configuration.
- Choose PPPoE when the ISP specifies that connection method and provides any required credentials.
Labels vary by router. If the available options do not match the ISP’s instructions, check the router manual or ask the ISP which connection type applies to your service.
Can you host a server with a dynamic IP?
A changing address can make it harder to reach a service by a numeric IP that people have saved. Dynamic DNS is a related service category: it can keep a hostname pointed at an address as that address changes. It does not make the underlying IP static, and a stable IP or hostname alone does not guarantee that incoming connections are allowed. Confirm that your ISP and router support the access your server needs.

Why your dynamic IP may seem unchanged
A DHCP server can renew a lease or give a client the same address again. The IETF’s discussion of DHCP behavior notes that same-address reuse is common in practice. So an address that remains unchanged across restarts may still be dynamic; the assignment method, not visible change frequency, is what makes it dynamic.
