It is not always named public_html: the active server or hosting configuration determines the actual location and how requested URLs are handled.
What a document root does
cPanel defines a domain’s document root as “the directory that contains a domain’s publicly-available files.” In a conventional file-serving setup, the web server uses this directory as the starting point for locating requested files. It may return a file, such as an image, or pass a script to an interpreter.

A domain can instead be configured as a proxy to a web application, in which case the server forwards requests to the application rather than serving files from the document root. cPanel explains that a domain serves content as a document root of files or as a proxy to a web app, but not both at once. cPanel’s explanation of how domains serve content was last modified September 9, 2026.
How a URL maps to a file
In Apache’s default mapping, the server appends the requested URL path to the configured DocumentRoot. For example, with /var/www/html as the root, a request for /work/ can resolve to /var/www/html/work/index.html when that file exists. This is an example of Apache’s default behavior, not a rule for every web server or application. Apache HTTP Server 2.4’s getting-started guide describes the mapping and index-file example.

NGINX uses the root directive as a filesystem base and appends the request URI when determining the file path. The directive can be set at different configuration levels, including http, server, or location; the applicable configuration determines the effective path. See NGINX’s guide to serving static content.
Neither example means every URL is a direct lookup of a file under one directory. Rewrites, aliases, applications, proxying, and other configuration can change which handler responds. When diagnosing a site, check the active configuration rather than assuming a URL corresponds to a particular folder.
Is public_html always the document root?
No. cPanel says a primary domain’s document root is typically public_html. Its additional-domain documentation gives an example of a domain-specific directory under the account’s public_html tree. Apache’s example uses /var/www/html. These are conventions and examples; the configured value for the domain is authoritative.

What happens when the document root changes?
In cPanel, a domain’s root is defined relative to the account’s home directory. Changing it directs the server to look in another location; it does not automatically move or rearrange the existing website files. If the site should load from the new location, its files must also be moved or deployed there. See cPanel’s domain-management documentation.

Why a directory URL may show a listing or fail
When a visitor requests a directory rather than a named file, the server typically checks for a configured index page. Apache’s guide uses index.html as an example. If no index page is present, directory-index settings determine whether the request fails or displays a list of files. cPanel explains these settings in its Indexes documentation.
If a directory URL behaves unexpectedly, check whether the expected index file is in the directory and whether directory listing is enabled. A listing can expose filenames to visitors, so it should be an intentional setting rather than an accidental substitute for an index page.

Treat the document root as part of the public-facing boundary. Where the deployment allows, keep credentials, backups, private code, and unrelated user files outside the tree served by the web server. Apache warns against direct web access to a user’s home directory for security reasons; its guidance does not establish that any particular hosting setup is secure. The actual risk depends on the site’s server and application configuration.

How to find the right document root
- Identify the domain and the server or hosting control panel that manages it.
- Read the configured root for that domain or virtual host; do not assume it is
public_html. - Check that the site’s deployed files are in that location if the server is expected to serve them directly.
- For a directory URL that fails or reveals filenames, check the expected index file and directory-listing settings.
- Check for application or proxy routing if requests are handled without files being served from the document root.
