A decentralized storage network (DSN) stores and retrieves data through multiple independent providers instead of relying on one company as the sole custodian. The network’s protocols coordinate how clients place, find, and retrieve data, and may verify that providers continue storing it. That arrangement does not automatically make files permanent, private, faster, or cheaper.
What is a decentralized storage network?
A DSN combines storage capacity from independent operators and coordinates their work without requiring clients to trust a single storage provider. A formal model in the Filecoin paper describes three basic operations: Put data into the network, Get it back, and Manage the system.

In practice, “decentralized” refers to how storage and coordination are organized. It does not mean every system works the same way, nor does it guarantee any particular level of availability, privacy, speed, or resistance to disruption.

- Prepare and identify the data. A system may encrypt data, divide it into blocks or shards, and create identifiers or metadata. In IPFS, content identifiers (CIDs) identify content. Sia’s documentation describes a different implementation that encrypts data on the client and uses erasure coding to create redundant shards.
- Find peers or providers. IPFS uses content-routing mechanisms, including a Kademlia distributed hash table, to find peers advertising the requested CID.
- Transfer the data. IPFS uses Bitswap to transfer blocks between peers. A gateway can also provide an HTTP interface for applications that do not implement IPFS protocols directly.
- Keep the data stored. Persistence depends on an ongoing arrangement: for example, a user may keep a node online, pay a pinning service, or make a storage deal with a network. The arrangement determines who retains the data and for how long.
- Verify or repair copies. Some networks use cryptographic proofs, audits, redundancy, or background repair. The exact mechanisms vary by implementation; there is no single verification or repair feature built into every DSN.
Is IPFS a storage provider?
No. IPFS describes itself as a suite of open protocols for addressing, routing, and transferring data using content addressing and peer-to-peer networking. The term can refer to the protocols, an implementation, or an open network of IPFS nodes; IPFS itself is not a storage provider or cloud service. See the IPFS documentation.

A CID helps identify content, and content retrieved under that identifier can be checked against it. But the identifier does not store a copy or guarantee that a peer will keep one online. Routing must find peers that have the data, and some node or service must retain it.
Does decentralized storage make files permanent?
No. IPFS documentation puts the distinction plainly: “While IPFS guarantees that any content on the network is discoverable, it doesn’t guarantee that any content is persistently available.” A CID is not a promise of continued storage. Availability depends on someone retaining the content, such as a node operator, a pinning service, or a storage provider under contract. Read the IPFS guidance on persistence for the distinction.

Pinning
Pinning tells an IPFS node or pinning service to retain content. A paid third-party service depends on continued payment and on the provider continuing to operate. Pinning can help keep content available, but it is not the same thing as a universal or perpetual guarantee.

In Filecoin, clients arrange storage deals with providers. A deal specifies the data, duration, and cost, and providers periodically verify that they are storing the data. Deal setup may be challenging for new users, and retrieval can be slower than using an IPFS pinning service, according to the IPFS persistence documentation. A storage deal is therefore a specific retention mechanism, not a promise that every retrieval will be immediate.

How do different networks implement storage?
These examples illustrate different roles and design choices; they are not independent performance comparisons.
IPFS: addressing and data transfer
IPFS provides protocols and a peer-to-peer network for finding and transferring content. To improve persistence, it can be paired with a pinning service or another storage arrangement. Uploading content to IPFS alone does not ensure that a copy stays available.

Filecoin: storage marketplace and deals
Filecoin lets clients make storage deals with providers. Its specification describes providers earning FIL by producing cryptographic proofs of capacity, while clients pay for storage deals. These protocol features do not imply that every retrieval is immediate.
Storj and Sia: distributed pieces and recovery mechanisms
Storj’s documentation describes audits of randomly selected pieces and repair as the number of available pieces approaches a recovery threshold. Sia’s documentation describes client-side encryption, erasure-coded shards, contracts, and background repair. These are provider-published descriptions of their own systems, not independent evidence that one service performs better than another.

What should you check before choosing a DSN?
Compare the specific services and arrangements, not just the word “decentralized.” Useful questions include:
- Persistence and duration: What mechanism retains the data, who is responsible for it, and how long does the arrangement last?
- Redundancy and recovery: Is the data replicated or erasure-coded? How many missing pieces can the system tolerate, and who repairs them?
- Retrieval: How predictable is retrieval, and which interface does the service provide?
- Privacy and keys: Is encryption performed on your device, and who controls the keys?
- Dependencies: Does using the service still depend on a hosted indexer, gateway, coordinator, or pinning company?
- Cost and operational work: Account for storage, retrieval bandwidth, contract or payment fees, setup complexity, and the work of operating your own infrastructure.
Sia documentation, accessed in 2026, gives an approximate network price of about $3 per terabyte per month, including 3x redundancy. That is a Sia-published estimate, not an independent market-wide price or a current quote for every provider; pricing and terms can change. There is no neutral, independently comparable market-wide price or performance figure established here, so treat provider claims about affordability, security, or performance as claims about their own systems.
