A custom domain name is a domain you control and connect to a website, app, or email service. It gives that service a recognizable address—such as example.com or app.example.com—instead of relying only on an address under the provider’s domain.
What “custom domain” means
A domain name is a readable Internet address, such as example.com. The Domain Name System (DNS) associates that name with information used to locate an online service. In a product’s setup instructions, “custom domain” usually means a domain or subdomain you control and have connected to that product. It is not a special type of DNS record; it describes who controls the name and how it is being used. Cloudflare’s DNS overview explains domain names and DNS, while Google Sites Help describes using a custom domain for a site.

Custom domain vs. provider subdomain
A provider subdomain is nested under a domain controlled by the service provider—for example, yourproject.provider.example. With a custom domain, you use a name you control, such as example.com or blog.example.com. A subdomain is part of a larger domain and can be directed to a particular site or application. The provider still determines which hostnames and DNS configurations it supports. Cloudflare’s subdomain documentation describes how subdomains and their records work.

- Registrar: Handles domain registration. Registration provides use of the name subject to the applicable terms; it does not create a website or mailbox. See Cloudflare’s registrar explanation.
- DNS host: Stores and publishes DNS records for the domain. A website provider may ask you to add records such as A, AAAA, CNAME, or TXT.
- Website or application host: Serves the site or app and must be configured to respond to the hostname. DNS pointing at a service alone does not configure that service to serve your site.
- Email provider: Handles mailboxes and mail delivery. It has its own DNS requirements, including MX records for routing incoming mail.
One company may provide several of these roles, or you may use different providers for registration, DNS, web hosting, and email. The domain can remain your public address while you change website hosts, provided you maintain the registration and update DNS as needed.

- THEIR LETTER LEADS THE STORY — this is not a name printed on a stock book: the letter that begins your child's name opens the book with its own dedicated page, and their name is woven through the pages that follow
- MADE TO ORDER, ONE AT A TIME — every copy is printed in the USA when you order it, so no two books are alike; choose hardcover for the keepsake shelf or softcover for little hands

- HAND-PAINTED WATERCOLOR FRIENDS — a gentle giraffe, elephant, and monkey guide little ones from A to Z across 32 pages of soft watercolor art in a sturdy 8 x 8 inch square format
- PERSONALIZE IN SECONDS — tell us the name (up to 14 letters), pick boy, girl, or neutral wording, and add an optional dedication message that prints inside the front cover.
How a custom domain is connected to a website
- Start with the website provider. Open its custom-domain setup flow and enter the hostname you want to use. The provider’s current instructions determine what it supports and which records you need. Firebase Hosting’s custom-domain guide is one example of provider-specific instructions.
- Verify control if requested. A provider may ask you to add a TXT record to your DNS settings to prove you control the domain.
- Add the requested traffic records. Follow the provider’s exact record type, name or host field, and value. Record values are service-specific, so there is no universal set that works for every website host.
- Use the right hostname format. Connecting
example.com(the apex domain) may require different instructions from connectingwww.example.comorapp.example.com. A DNS form may represent the apex with@, the full domain, or an empty host field; follow the destination provider’s instructions. - Confirm the hostname at the service. DNS directs requests, but the website or application host also needs to recognize and serve the chosen hostname.
Does a custom domain include email?
No. Registering a domain does not automatically provide email accounts. To use an address such as [email protected], you need an email provider and must configure the DNS records it specifies. In particular, changing an MX record routes incoming mail. Microsoft advises preparing users and mailboxes before moving mail flow to Microsoft 365; see its custom-domain setup guidance. A website and email can use different providers on the same domain when their DNS records are configured appropriately.
Choosing which hostname to use
You can connect an apex domain such as example.com, a subdomain such as www.example.com, or both if the service supports them. Choose based on the provider’s supported setup and the public address you want people to use. Check the provider’s instructions for each hostname: the required records and host-field values may differ.
